High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.



Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Bachelor’s degree in photography, fine arts, videography, communications, journalism or related field, with expertise in still photography, commercial photography, photojournalism, studio photography, videography and/or digital editing a plus; or an equivalent combination of education, training and work experience.
Minimum of five years of professional experience (excluding internships and apprenticeships) in photography is required.
Must present portfolio with samples exhibiting digital, web and print projects. Portfolio demonstrates solid conceptual skills and knowledge of photography, composition and storytelling.
Sound business judgment, highest integrity and commitment to quality and accuracy; strong desire and demonstrated self-initiative to take on new responsibilities and accountabilities that help further career progression; self-starter with strong organizational and project management skills to support ability to independently manage and coordinate all facets of the job duties; strategic thinker; ethical; maintains confidentiality.
Strong proficiency in the use of industry standard image and editing software is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is also required.
Experience with digital assets management systems and techniques; working knowledge of formatting images and videos for the web and social media.
Creative thinker; ability to adapt in dynamic environment; strong customer service-oriented skills; action-oriented; detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work under pressure.

Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The University Photographer supports the Office of the Chancellor/Office of University Relations to position North Carolina A&T State University as a leader in higher education by increasing public awareness of the university and its academic programs, research and other strategic initiatives by publicizing its accomplishments and resources to a wide array of internal and external audiences.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office of University Relations is administered under the Office of the Chancellor of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T). University Relations is the central communications office for N.C. A&T that is responsible for marketing, branding, crisis communications, media relations and other major elements of identification and communications for the university. The office works with academic and administrative units across the university to promote news, information and events that align with the institution’s strategic priorities and brand positioning. N.C. A&T is one of America’s most highly respected universities, focused on interdisciplinary research, creative scholarship, exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, and community service and engagement.
N.C. A&T is one of 17 institutions of The University of North Carolina System and is a land-grant, doctoral higher research activity institution committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarly and creative research, and effective public service. 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, M-F; some nights and weekends required

Duties
Possesses in-depth knowledge and technical skill in the areas of photography and, to a lesser extent, videography. Keeps up with current developments and trends in areas of expertise. Uses a variety of standard and specialized photographic, video and lighting equipment. Ability to serve as a key resource to others on a wide variety of design and visual art elements. Ability to establish standards for visual arts and develops/determines non-routine techniques/methods to accomplish objectives. Highly skilled and considerable technical knowledge of overall design concepts. Captures and reproduces photographic and video images representing the full range of activities occurring on and off campus using photojournalistic, creative and artistic skill. Photographs university leadership, including Board of Trustee members, Chancellor and Cabinet members, students, faculty, staff, alumni and others for use in printed and other materials. Directs specialized photo shoots involving a range of university settings and individuals. Provides photography as needed for media relations purposes and sharing with external media. Manipulates, enhances and/or color corrects digital photographs as required in Photoshop, InDesign and related programs. Produces digital files that meet the color and resolution specifications for print, video and web-based communications. Organizes and maintains photo archive database/data assets management system. Manages, equips and maintains in-house photo studio. Operates and maintains photo printer. Supports University Relations and offices across the university by uploading files to the content management system (CMS) and the online photo archive platform, Smugmug. Maintains photography, video and computer equipment and supplies. Performs other duties and responsibilities requiring technical expertise as assigned.

Duties
As the official University Photographer, this individual is our top communications officer for photographic purposes. Ability to independently manage project timelines, resources, staff and leads implementation efforts in all areas of visual arts. Ability to manage complex projects. Provides oversight for project(s) and all related activities in that setting to include quality assurance and safety. Coordinates and manages related resources (e.g., equipment, facilities, supplies) as necessary for assigned project(s). Assesses and monitors environmental risks, if any, and quality control. Establishes a set of tasks and activities associated with an intended outcome and timeline for print and electronic publications/media. Ensures actions are performed and/or implemented to achieve the results of the project. Coordinates photo and video shoots in collaboration with team members and clients. Maintains a library of quality photo images and video B-roll. Regularly and routinely provides images for the university’s website. Assists with maintaining a consistent institutional social media presence using branded photography.

Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships and consult with clients/customers on issues and requests that require the creation and implementation of custom or non-standard solutions. Develops and maintains strong relationships with clients/customers and through active listening, and understanding and responding to identified needs. Assists internal and external clients/customers with photographic needs for use in printed and online applications. Serves as a photography liaison, as directed, to the general public.

Ability to advise and consult with high-level administrators on visual/graphic arts methods and procedures. Provides advice and counsel to faculty, researchers, staff, students and others on using photography to enhance understanding of the university’s initiatives. Understands the university’s programs/initiatives, organization and culture. Advises clients/customers on best settings and appearance for photo/video shoots. Recommends the selection and procurement of equipment and supplies. Plans and art directs photo/video shoots with clients/customers and advises on other professional topics related to uses and applications of images. Ability to advise, consult with and implement the planning, developing, constructing, and designing of visual/media art efforts, such as educational and promotional materials, intended to reach a broad external audience.
