Purpose of your job position:
The primary purpose of your job position is to provide your assigned residents direction regarding their personal care needs, and as may be directed by your supervisors.

Delegation of Authority:

As a Universal Worker, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.


Job Functions:

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

Assist and provide direction to residents regarding their personal care needs, which include but are not limited to grooming, hygiene, dressing, nutrition, housekeeping, etc.

Assist with meal services, including meal preparation, serving, and ensuring residents’ dietary needs are met.

Perform housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and comfortable living space for residents. Keep common areas clean at all times.

Manage laundry services, including washing, drying, folding, and organizing residents’ clothing and linens

Engage residents in a variety of leisure activities to promote mental and emotional well-being.

Make and Change bed linens as needed.

Answer resident call lights and respond to door alarms promptly.

Complete all required documentation in a neat, timely, and accurate manner.

Maintain a clean, neat and professional appearance at all times.

Personnel Functions

Follow work assignments, and/or work schedules in completing and performing your assigned tasks.

Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with our established policies and procedures, and as instructed by your supervisor.

Notify your unit coordinator/supervisor if needing to leave the facility during your scheduled shift.

Report all complaints and grievances made by the residents.

Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other facility personnel to assure that nursing services can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.

Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift.

Meet with your shift’s nursing personnel, on a regularly scheduled basis, to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services.

Safety & Sanitation

Notify the charge/staff nurse of any resident leaving/missing from the facility.

Keep floors dry. Report spills immediately.

Keep excess supplies and equipment off the floor. Store in designated areas.

Keep residents personal possessions off the floor and properly stored.

Follow established smoking regulations. Report all violations.

Keep the call light within easy reach of the resident.

Report all hazardous conditions and equipment to the charge/staff nurse immediately.

Follow established safety precautions in the performance of all duties.

Report all safety violations.

Before leaving work area for breaks, or at the end of the day, store all equipment and supplies in the proper place.

Wash hands before and after performing any service for the resident.

Wash wheelchairs, walkers, etc., as instructed.

Clean, disinfect, and return all resident care equipment to its designated storage area after each use.

Perform routine housekeeping duties

Wash hands before entering and leaving an isolation room/area.

Report any communicable or infectious disease that you contract to the Director of Nursing.

Follow established isolation precautions and procedures.

Use gowns and gloves as indicated.

Equipment & Supply Functions

Use only the equipment you have been trained to use.

Operate all equipment in a safe manner.

Use only the equipment and supplies necessary to do the job. Do not be wasteful.

Report defective equipment to the appropriate personnel.

Inform the charge/staff nurse of your equipment/supply needs.

Resident Rights

Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent resident information to ensure resident’s rights are protected.

Ensure that you treat all residents fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect.

Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy.

Knock before entering a resident’s room.

Honor the resident’s refusal of treatment request. Report such requests to your supervisor.

Report all grievances and complaints made by the resident to the charge/staff nurse.

Ensure that resident’s rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, are followed at all times.

Working Conditions:

Works in well-lighted and ventilated areas, as well as throughout the nursing services area (i.e., nurses’ stations, residents’ rooms, etc.).

Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours.

Is subject to frequent interruptions.

Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.

Communicates with nursing personnel as well as other personnel within facility.

Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.

Is willing to work beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, on any and all units as assigned, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.

Is subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday.

Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, disease, conditions, etc., including exposure to the HIV and Hepatitis B viruses.

Requirements:

Educational Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent required.

Health care or nurse’s aide training with a 100-hour nurse's aide training preferred

Physical Requirements

Physically able to assist residents with their daily living and care needs – must be able to regularly lift/move up to 50lbs independently and up to 200lbs with assistance.

Must be able to meet all physical demands of the job which includes, but is not limited to: seeing, speaking, touching, walking, standing, bending, and reaching overhead, crouching/kneeling or crawling.

Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.

Must be able to see and hear, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.

Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.

Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility which include a physical examination.

Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and potentially hostile people within the facility.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and push/pull a minimum of 50 lbs. force.

Specific Requirements:

Comply with all personnel policies, community policies & procedures, as well as State & Federal regulations and standards.

Must possess a genuine interest in caring for seniors.

Ability to work well with others and take direction from management, as well as take initiative – willing to go above and beyond to ensure our residents’ needs are met and they are comfortable in their living environment.

Conduct oneself in a professional & caring manner and encourage others to do so as well.

Dependable and able to meet scheduling requirements with no restrictions.

Must possess a general knowledge of laws and restrictions regarding senior living care, as well as a solid understanding of opportunities and limits of other levels of care within senior living.

Staff Development

Attend and participate in scheduled training and educational classes.

Attend and participate in scheduled orientation programs and activities.

Attend and participate in in-services and continuing education programs as scheduled/directed. Must have a minimum of 12 hours of in-services/continuing education classes per year.
