Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Finance and Operations (EVP) the CFO oversees the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of the University’s financial services and departments, supporting and promoting profitable goals and objectives.
The CFO will play a key role in furthering MUSC’s mission through leadership and service in the areas of budget formulation and management, compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, treasury management, accounting, disbursements, inventory and surplus services, financial reporting, grants and contracts accounting, procurement and contracts management, select systems security, and other assignments as designated by the EVP.
The CFO will serve collaboratively with the EVP as financial liaison to the Board of Trustees and effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the Board and its committees. The CFO will also serve as financial liaison with State governmental organizations such as the Commission on Higher Education, the House Ways and Means Committee, the Senate Finance Committee, and the Governor’s Office. In collaboration with other executive staff, and skilled and trusted departmental employees, the CFO will operate, maintain, and control the essential operating systems, information, and financial business of the institution. Other central areas of responsibility include defining and implementing key performance indicators and strategic objectives for the division and, as appropriate, the entire organization; facilitating measurement of those objectives, reporting results to the executive team; monitoring cash flow and overseeing investment activities to ensure appropriate supply of cash at highest yield while complying with statutory limitations on types of investments. The CFO will serve as an advocate for the University with rating agencies to ensure the highest possible rating and ensure availability of adequate and appropriate equipment, staffing, and systems.
Direct reports of the CFO include the Controller, Director of Grants & Contracts Accounting, Chief Procurement Officer, Divisional Manager of Communications and Change Management, Senior Financial Analyst, and Manager of Systems & Procedures.

Job Description

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 12 years’ experience in a field relevant to the role, such as business, finance, or accounting.

Master’s degree and a minimum of 10 years’ experience preferred.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred.

 Experience in higher education and/or at an academic medical center is preferred.

Demonstrated progressive expertise in strategic financial planning, financial analysis, asset management, procurement, debt financing, accounting, and external audits. 

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a leadership role.
