Unit Leader

Job Summary:

This position requires the development and implementation of all aspects of staff supervision, age-appropriate programming, and communication with camper families for campers.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties as assigned)

• Attend mandatory staff training.
• Serve as on-site weekend supervisor for the CITs for one weekend during the summer.
• Participate in the planning and conducting of pre-camp training, including training staff on the CIT program.
• Plan, prepare and execute evening activities, elective and supervise land-based specialist.
• Supervise LIT/ CIT training to all participants.
• Communicate with LIT/CIT parents via; email, at check-in or check-out, or responding to phone calls and voicemails.
• Create weekly schedules, including unit assignments, and ensure distribution to appropriate staff during staff meetings.
• Regularly assess the specialist and LIT/CIT program participants’ performances, observing them directly working with campers on a daily basis, and provide spontaneous feedback when appropriate throughout the camp session. Ensure feedback provided is age appropriate.
• Distribute Specialist and LIT/CIT evaluations to appropriate staff and ensure completion.
• Complete one-on-one formal, written evaluations of each LIT/CIT each Friday while camp is in session.
• Troubleshoot any problems with assigned areas, including interpersonal conflicts, issues with staff.
• Ensure adherence to safety procedures during programming.
• Serve in a unit counselor-type capacity during rest hour and evenings, supervising the LIT/CITs when they are in the unit.
• Conduct a daily LIT/CIT meeting after breakfast each camp day to discuss issues and provide ongoing training.
• Assist with weekly camp clean up, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick-up, etc.
• Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols required by NYS Department of Health and GSNYPENN.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Unit Leader-Programs supervises assigned specialist, does supervise LIT/CIT campers.

Minimum Qualification Standards:

• Be at least 20 years of age.
• Possess at least one summer of camp staff experience.
• Believe in the Girl Scout mission.
• Prior experience teaching children, working with children, or working as a camp counselor required.
• Current First Aid and CPR training, or willingness to obtain during pre-camp training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously.
• Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community.
• Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.
• Skills related to lesson planning and implementation, such as: time management, creativity, flexibility, and public speaking skills.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Light mental and visual attentionrequired for performing work where there is some variety, but actions taken and decisions made are limited to few possibilities. Work requires some coordination with others.

Physical Exertion:

• Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
• Walking on uneven terrain, up and down hills for distances up to mile
• Endurance to meet emergency needs.
• Ability (and willingness) to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours Environmental Conditions:
