Job description

The Unit Leader is responsible for acting as the head counselor and primary caregiver for their assigned unit campers, including ensuring a safe and healthy environment is maintained, supervising camper behavior, identifying, and managing hazards, and promoting the tenets of the Girl Scout Law. The Unit Leader is also responsible for teaching, or assisting in teaching, different activities throughout camp.

Hidden Lake Camp: Our Camps are unique and shaped by the physical, and outdoor spaces in which they take place, the team-building nature of our activities, and the welcoming environment that we strive to create. Nestled on four hundred acres in the southern portion of the Adirondack Park, Hidden Lake Camp comprises a small private lake, streams, low mountains, woodlands, and beautiful hiking trails. The lake is an ideal setting for swimming, canoeing, and stand-up paddle-boarding, and kayaking. Camp facilities include a large playfield, high and low ropes courses, platform tents and lean-to units, a modern dining hall, a health lodge, a shower house, and buildings for activities and programs. Campers range from first through twelfth grade.

Summer Camp dates at Hidden Lake Camp are June 30th – August 2nd 2024. These dates include pre-camp training and post-camp clean-up. All positions include room and board. Camp staff are generally off from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon each week. Employees who complete their contract in good standing are eligible for a $150 retention bonus.

GSNENY operates two summer overnight camps; Hidden Lake Camp in Lake George NY and Lake Clear camp near Saranac Lake, NY. Many staff positions can be combined to work at both camps for a full summer of employment (8 weeks total, June 30th – August 23rd).

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties may be assigned)

· Assist in the supervision and guidance of counselor staff.

· Assist the Assistant Camp Director with counselor performance appraisals.

· Keep the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director regularly informed of staff performance, morale and conflicts.

· Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their unit, during all unit times, which includes meals, flag, all-camp activities, unit time, and bedtime.

· Lead activities or assist in leading them as assigned. Activities may include: teambuilding games, archery, arts and crafts, hiking, fire building, outdoor cooking etc.

· Apply basic principles of youth development, connect with the campers, and work with campers to create positive and meaningful relationships utilizing communication, respect and empowerment.

· Act as a leader and role model to other staff members through enthusiastic participation in all programming and communicate with other staff members in a way that is positive and encouraging.

· Plan an enriching CIT program and schedule that develops that campers’ leadership, teamwork, communication, and camp skills in collaboration with Program Specialist -Arts & Crafts/Leadership specialist.

· Evaluate CIT campers’ performance and provide feedback to campers, in collaboration with Program Specialist – leadership.

· Keep Camp Director and Assistant Director updated on CIT’s performance, morale, and conflicts.

· Take an active role in the camp community, by participating enthusiastically in all aspects of camp, including camp traditions.

· Strive to provide a fun, exciting, and inviting atmosphere for all campers

· Maintain campers’ overall health and safety while at camp, ensuring campers receive medication as needed, alerting the Camp Director and Health Supervisor of any issues, and ensuring each campers’ personal health and hygiene needs are met.

· Create weekly schedules for assigned groups, with input from campers.

· Follow all safety procedures and camp rules.

· Utilize CPR and First Aid Skills consistent with training and certification.

· Interact with campers’ parents, utilizing strong customer service skills and maintaining good rapport.

· Work cooperatively with fellow staff members to ensure a positive camp environment.

· Assist with check-in and check-out procedures.

· Assist with keeping cabin or tent unit and assigned bathroom area clean.

· Ensure unit area, bathrooms, and common program areas are clean and ready for the next camp session.

· Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols required by NYS Department of Health and GSNENY.

· Record time worked on timecard daily. Sign and submit timecards weekly on Friday.

Key Qualifications –

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Believe in the Girl Scout mission
  • Desire to work with children in the outdoors and to immerse one’s self in the outdoor environment
  • Prior summer day or Resident Camp experience preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification, or willing to obtain

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously
  • Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community
  • Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.
