The Unit Coordinator works under the direction of Nursing Administration at the facility to manage and perform the clerical functions necessary to provide quality of care on the patient units. They also serve as a member of the treatment team by providing continuous patient care, observation, interaction, and role modeling to patients under the direction of the Nursing Administration. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position. Staff must demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work with hospital units providing care to varied populations.
Qualifications:Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. One (1) year experience working with a psychiatric patient population. Knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques with understanding of mental illness, and previous secretarial experience preferred.
Licensure: Must maintain a valid driver's license in the applicable state.
Knowledge: Must possess experience and knowledge of interventional and administrative duties necessary to support nursing and patient care on assigned units. Assists in the direct care and management of patients with medical and behavioral issues as directed by the treatment team. Assists with unit programming to facilitate the carryover of therapy issues, leisure activities, and activities of daily living for patients on the unit. Must possess knowledge of dual diagnosis/chemical dependency/mental health patients; age-specific patient issues, limit setting and behavior management, crisis prevention and intervention techniques; knowledge and comprehension of regulatory agency standards (DOH, DPW, CMS, Joint Commission, etc.); staff development procedures and requirements; ability to communicate orally, telephonically, and in writing; working knowledge of computer systems and various software. Basic Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Must maintain certification verbal de-escalation, and Handle With Care. Must possess good interpersonal skills and the ability to be a team player. Good documentation, organization and time management skills are necessary. Skilled in the following: writing, presenting, organizing, attention to detail, comparing and merging documents, creating labels, creating and managing comments, formatting tables, creating forms using fields and advanced form tools. Must be effective in decision-making and problem solving. Successful completion of the company’s alternatives to managing aggression program within 90 days of employment and prior to assisting with restraining procedures. CPR within 90 days of employment. May be required to work overtime and flexible hours.
Environmental Conditions:
General hospital environment. Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous waste.
Physical Requirements:
Must have physical agility to manage patients. Push, pull and lift up to 40 pounds. Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping. Drug and alcohol free as evidenced by negative results of post-offer, pre-employment urine drug screen.
