Graduate Intern Chemistry, Research and Development

 

Background

Barinthus Biotherapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing vaccines and immunotherapies for cancer, autoimmune and infectious diseases. To address our target indications, we employ a novel self-assembling nanoparticle technology based on amphiphilic peptides called SNAP. The SNAP platform combines precision targeting of defined protein epitopes coupled with drug delivery to modulate the immune system in an antigen-specific context. Barinthus Biotherapeutics is now seeking applications from highly motivated individuals with experience in immunology to join our growing team in Maryland.

 

About the position

This successful candidate will be responsible for conducting nanoparticle formulation development research for downstream scale up by manufacturing teams. The position will also provide support for candidates to plan, execute and analyze formulation and support related immunoassays. The primary focus for the successful candidate will be the synthesis of nanoparticle precursors, formulation of nanoparticles, design of experiments to test hypotheses using novel formulations and analysis of nanoparticle components. This work will support the preclinical activities for immunotherapies as part of a multi-disciplinary team of chemists, immunologists, toxicologists and engineers. The role will be primarily laboratory-based, but there will be opportunities for planning, presentation, and strategy with acquired experience. The ability to work on site is required.

 

Key responsibilities include

  • Design of experiments to test novel nanoparticle formulations
  • Perform preclinical studies to click chemistry conjugations of peptides to precursor components
  • Formulation of monomer peptide conjugates and drugs into nanoparticles
  • Analysis of resulting material using HPLC, LC-MS, DLS and UV-Vis
  • Manage and organize chemistry lab inventories, instrumentation, and spaces
  • Reporting of findings
  • Work with the research team to help design research studies in vivo and in vitro
  • Interface with the immunology team to set priorities for synthesis and testing of candidate immunotherapies

 

Essential knowledge, experience, and skills

  • BS in immunology, chemistry, biology, or related discipline
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment
  • Experience using SOPs and operating under quality systems
  • Experience in data management, analysis, and presentation
  • Some knowledge of chemistry is preferred, but an interest to learn is acceptable.
  • An interest in the drug discovery process.
  • The ability to be onsite in Germantown part-time (hours and schedule are negotiable).
  • Some experience in a lab setting is preferred but not required.
