Shift/Hours Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Position may be subject to overtime due to emergency calls. Primary Role To perform a variety of tasks to assist in the efficient and reliable operation, maintenance, protection and appearance of all pipelines, services, hydrants, valves, and other appurtenances within the Distribution system. Key Accountabilities * Performs work assigned by supervisor, collects, compiles, and records work data. * Breaks up pavement using pavement breakers, pry bars, shovels, picks and other hand tools to dig excavations preparatory to removing and or repairing pipe. * Removes off-haul from excavations; backfills, tamps and installs temporary paving using assorted hand tools and tamping machine. * Ensures jobsite is secure prior to leaving. * Determines appropriate material, pipe sections, valves, and fittings needed to perform assigned work. * Performs cutting, threading, brazing, soldering, and connecting or adjoining pipe and fittings as required. * Performs taps as required. * Drives Company vehicles as required, obtain/maintain D.O.T. certification. * Installation or removal of shoring systems as required. * Follows established safety guidelines and procedures. * Performs duties of Laborer as required. * Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge/Skills * Perform manual labor activities including standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling. * Lifting items weighing 50 to 90 lbs frequently and occasionally over 90 lbs. * Carry items weighing 50 to 90 lbs frequently and occasionally over 90 lbs. * Perform tightening and loosening activities involving various size bolts frequently. * Climb into and out of excavations, vaults and excavations 4+ feet in depth using a ladder. * Bending, kneeling, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing. * Drive Company vehicle and operate two way communication system. * Operate heavy machinery such as tapping machine, air compressor, jack hammer, ditch pump, and tamping machine. * Work outdoors in all kinds of weather. * Follow all established safety guidelines and procedures. * Requires mathematical development sufficient to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure. * Must have developed language skills to the point to be able to read at least at a minimum level. Write legibly. * Speak clearly and distinctly with appropriate pauses, emphasis and correct pronunciation. Must be able to communicate using two-way radio and other communications equipment. * Data: Copying, or entering data. * People: Serving: Attending to the needs, requests, or the expressed or implicit wishes of people. Immediate response is involved. * Speaking or signaling: Talking with and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving directions to helpers or assistance, and communicate with customers. * Things: Manipulating: Using body members, tools, or special devices to work, move, guide, or place objects or materials. Involves some latitude for judgment with regard to precision attained and selecting appropriate tool, object, or material although this is readily manifest. Experience/Education * Vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the job training, or essential experience. * High school graduate or state recognized educational equivalent certificate. * Have and maintain a valid driver's license, with an acceptable driving record. Work Envrionment * 20% or more of the normal work day the employee is exposed to the following conditions: o Confined Areas: Entering excavations or large meter vaults. o Exposed to Weather: All work is outside work. o Wet: Contact with water or other liquids. o Humidity: Atmospheric condition with moisture content sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort. o Extreme Temperatures: Exposed to ambient temperature extremes both hot and cold. o Chemicals: Gasoline, oil, or substances in the soil. o Allergenics/Irritants: Potential exposure to poison ivy, oak, sumac, insects, etc. o Potential Hazards: Driving, working in traffic, working with and around excavation equipment, compressed air. o Customer Contact: Each service order worked is potential customer contact. o Noise Exposure: Jackhammer, air compressor, trash pumps, gas tamp. o Vibrations: Using jackhammer, gas tamp. o Other: Working or driving in darkness.
