The Truck Driver, Heavy is responsible for coordinating with and advising requesting units regarding support times and specific movement requirements. This position is also responsible for supervision of loading and unloading, relocation of miscellaneous cargo as needed, submittal required periodic reports, coordinating service and repairs, and attends training as required as well as adhering to all DOT safety and licensing requirements. Drive 2,500-gallon fuel tanker and dispense fuel for contract vehicles as required.


Responsibilities

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:

  • Ensures vehicle inspections (PCMS) are conducted and discrepancies corrected by operator, when possible, or vehicles are turned in for maintenance.
  • Accountable for keeping truck and associated equipment clean.
  • Inspects trailer before and after trips, recording and defects.
  • Supports organizational safety program and emphasizes avoidance of accidents and follows accident procedures, should an accident occur.
  • Provides line haul support over state-approved highways as needed, which may include overnight stay.
  • Ensures all training, safety, and required licensing stays up-to-date and complies with all DOT requirements.
  • Responsible for performance basic vehicle maintenance, such as adding oil, radiator fluid, or fuel, as well as performing minor repairs.
  • Examines condition of trailers after unloading to ensure there is no damage.
  • Couples/Uncouples trailers by changing jack positions, connects/disconnects air or electrical lines, or manipulates fifth-wheel locks.
  • Ensures all load-related documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Reads and interprets maps to determine vehicle routes.
  • Loads and unloads trucks, or helps others with loading/unloading, operating any special loading-related equipment on vehicle and other equipment a necessary.
  • Clears debris from loaded trailers.
  • Cranks trailer landing gear up or down, safely securing vehicles.
  • Performs emergency roadside repairs, such as changing tires, tire chains, installation of light bulbs, or replacing spark plugs.
  • Places empty carts/pallets inside trailers to use in facilitating placement and movement of goods.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by management.
  • Job duties and responsibilities may change due to contractual requirements.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment. Drivers are exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle.
  • Activities will revolve around extended periods of sitting and driving. Visual acuity necessary to detect potential safety hazards and road hazards.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of Truck Driving/Tractor-Trailer rigs preferred
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License with a HazMat endorsement
  • Must be able to maintain driving privileges aboard the Fort Liberty Installation.
  • Current Medical Examiner’s certificate and/or medical variance documents (i.e. Vision, Skills Performance or Diabetic waivers, or other exemptions)
  • Specific contractual requirements regarding education and experience prevail where applicable.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and random drug screening if selected.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have experience and the ability to maintain a clean driving record, to stay physically and mentally fit and to meet the other qualifications and skills required to handle driving a big rig in dangerous situations. Comprehensive knowledge of governing regulations, policies, procedures, and state and local laws.

SKILLS:

  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations, to be familiar with not just traffic laws but rules regarding how often they are required to rest, maximum miles driven.
  • A clean driving record, or they can have their license suspended or revoked
  • Physical fitness, since Truck Drivers are required to pass a physical exam every two years
  • Hand-eye coordination, since they must coordinate their hands, legs and eyes to maintain a fast reaction time on the roads
  • Visual and hearing acuity, in accordance with federal regulations which mandate that Truck Drivers have to hear a forced whisper at 5 feet, have at least 20/40 vision, a 70-degree field of vision and the ability to distinguish the colors of traffic lights
  • Valid CDL Driver’s License with hazmat endorsement
