Job Description:
This position is located on the campus of the State University of New York at Old Westbury. Employment, payroll and benefits are through and subject to the Research Foundation for SUNY policies and procedures. The Research Foundation for SUNY is a private educational corporation. This is a grant funded position.
The TRIO Student Support Services office (TRIO-SSS) is a federally funded program that serves to boost the performance and help discover potential for motivated students having a low income, disability, and/or are considered first generation. TRIO-SSS Counselors help students choose a major that is compatible with their personal and professional aspirations. The TRIO-SSS Counselor works with students to develop a clear plan to complete their college and liberal education requirements and form a foundation for their undergraduate degree. Counselors assist students as they transition into their major department. The TRIO-SSS Counselor provides students with the skill sets to be academically and socially successful.
Reporting to the Director, the TRIO-SSS Counselor will:
  • Provide academic advisement to first- and second-year TRIO-SSS students.
  • Maintain accurate advisement records.
  • TRIO counselors provide proactive intervention and support for all TRIO-SSS participants.
  • Recruit eligible students into the program and conduct interviews to verify program eligibility.
  • Implement Early Alert Campaigns.
  • Advocate for first-generation and low-income students.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of project services under the direction of the TRIO-SSS Director in collaboration with other SSS staff members.
  • Provide workshops that support academic success, navigation of the college, social skills, financial-aid, financial literacy and graduate and career development.
  • Plan community service activities to foster community engagement.
  • Attend Campus Open House and other campus events to represent TRIO-SSS.
  • Work closely with the First-Year Advisement, Student Success Center, Transfer Services Office, Services for Students with Disabilities, Career Planning and Development, Tutoring Center, Enrollment Services, Orientation Office, School of Education and School of Business.
  • Support the TRIO program objectives of increased retention and graduation for SSS participants.
  • Participate on campus committees as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the TRIO-SSS director.

Advising sessions include but are not limited to: assisting with course selections, discussion for major options, explanation of requirements, planning to completion, graduate school planning, instruction on use the online tools and student platforms, coaching for time management/study skills, and referral to campus resources.
The TRIO-SSS Counselor must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and occasional weekend hours.

Salary Range: $46,000.00 - $49,500.00
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in higher education, academic advising and /or teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of career services
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Proficient in MS Suite.
  • Experience with higher education student databases/systems.
  • Experience working with a culturally diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education or counseling related preferred.
  • Experience advising transfer students.
  • Experience with Ellucian Banner, EAB Navigate and Slate.
