Job Summary:  

Student Development for Athletes at St. John's University, a Division I program with membership in the Big East Conference, is seeking qualified candidates for a Student-Athlete Support Services Assistant position. The Student Development for Athletes programs provide a wide range of services from the recruiting stage through the graduation. The program focuses on four key areas: Academic Support, Career Development, Leadership, and Community Service. Reporting to Eric Rienecker, Associate Athletic Director Student Support Services, the Student­ Athlete Support Services Assistant will assist in the implementation of Student Development programming and coordinate special events for the Student Athlete Center for Excellence; be responsible for all general office operations including supervision of part-time student workers; and serve as a resource for the student development team, all coaches, staff and 300 student­ athletes.  

  

Essential Functions:  

Essential functions of the position include:  

  • Process all budget-related transactions, such as purchases, supplies, check requisitions and T&E expense reimbursements, and ensure accurate reconciliation.  
  • Set up, maintain and utilize confidential filing system and department records to assure availability and easy authorized access to all information.  
  • Perform data entry and retrieval of information using Banner, Teamworks and other software systems to accurately track study hours, tutoring hours, and community service hours for all student-athletes.  
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the NCAA and Big East Conference rules and regulations as well as St. John's University Policies and Procedures related to leadership development for student-athletes.  
  • Operate within the guidelines, policies, and procedures in your area of responsibility within Student Development for Athletes to ensure 100% compliance with the NCAA/Big East rules and regulations.  
  • Significantly understand the life of a student-athlete and the unique issues associated with schedules, travel, competitions, and practice times.  
  • Resolve matters by contacting resources, both internal and external to the University.  
  • Promote involvement with campus and community organizations to help develop multi­ dimensional student-athletes.

  • Effective organizational skills, strong listening, and communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to work and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse educational and social backgrounds  
  • Working knowledge of NCAA athletic eligibility regulations, commitment to academic integrity, and compliance with the University, conference, and NCAA regulations  
  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team  
  • Should exhibit flexibility and be able to perform successfully when challenged by changing workflow priorities  

  

Supervisory Responsibility:  

This position manages hiring, training, supervision, guidance, and feedback of all part-time staff. This part-time staff includes approximately 35 graduate assistants, student workers, work study workers, tutors, academic coaches, and supplemental instruction leaders. The training and supervision role of this position is to ensure academic integrity and strict adherence to the NCAA, Big East, and University policies and procedures.  

  

Work Environment:  

This position operates in a professional office environment. This position requires you to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.  

  

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:  

This is a full-time position. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. With this position, there is also flexibility in working events and weekend hours

  • Previous experience working with collegiate student-athletes  
  • Previous experience as a student-athlete  
  • Experience in event planning and management skills

Please note this position is subject to flexibility and changes to day-to-day tasks and hours.  
 

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $37,400 to $40,490. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. 

 

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
