Job Description
The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Peer Academic Tutor is responsible for assisting TRIO SSS participants at Kishwaukee College with increasing their academic knowledge by clarifying problems, working on study skills, and meeting with students on a regular basis. This position is scheduled to work from August 2021 to May 2022.
Qualifications/Skills Required
• Be enrolled at Kishwaukee College and in good academic standing
• Possess a grade of "B" or higher in the course/courses of which will be tutoring, verified by transcript
• Show an understanding and concept knowledge of course material in the areas of developmental or college level math, biology (general or environmental), chemistry, and/or anatomy and physiology.
• Previous experience providing learning support and/or instruction is a plus
• Demonstrate good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to a diverse student population.
• Is responsible, reliable, punctual, and patient.
• Maintain respectful and professional behavior at all times.
• Uphold confidentiality of the tutoring sessions.
• Promote a safe and positive work environment.
• Meet with students individually or in small groups to give learning assistance.
• Use a variety of instructional techniques in tutoring sessions to meet students' learning needs.
• Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize students' potential for academic progress.
• Maintain a weekly schedule of available hours with the office of TRIO Student Support Services for students to walk in and receive assistance with their courses as well as for tutoring appointments.
• Hold review sessions when needed especially during mid-term and final's week.
• Keep regular records of tutor sessions for progress review.
• Collect and identify data needed for assessment of student learning and program development.
• Contribute in the development of supplemental materials for specific subject areas.
• Attend tutor-training sessions as required by the Academic Specialist.
