Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Experiment Safety Engineering group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a TREAT Reactor Engineer.

Our team works a hybrid 4x10 schedule located at our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off!

Responsibilities Include:

The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for a Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) Reactor Engineer reporting to the TREAT Reactor Engineering and Safety Department Manager. TREAT is a facility that performs transient testing of nuclear fuels and materials in support of Advanced Fuel Research for industry and government partners. TREAT is capable of controlled prompt critical operations, reaching power levels in excess of 16,000 MW.

If you want to be part of pioneering advanced nuclear fuels development and experimentation and advancing knowledge of fast reactor research and development, including deployment of next generation modular and micro nuclear reactors then this position is for you.

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development, and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.

Treat Reactor Engineers apply and develop advanced concepts and techniques in performing complex reactor core physics analyses, using Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP), SCALE, or equivalent software, in support of operations and experiments in TREAT.  Work on complex problems and provide innovative solutions.  Lead and/or provide Reactor Engineering support and peer review the work of others internal and external to the organization.  Serve as mentor in area of technical expertise to junior staff. Determine optimum configuration for experiments and perform analysis to demonstrate compliance with safety limits.


Minimum Requirements:

  • PR0300 Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or a related science and 5 years related experience or advanced degree in engineering or related science and 3 years related experience performing reactor core physics analyses and performing reactor surveillance measurements

  •   PR0400 Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science and 8 years related experience or advanced degree in engineering or related science and 6 years related experience performing reactor core physics analyses and performing reactor surveillance measurements

  • Proficiency with Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) Transport Code strongly preferred

  •   Excellent oral communication skills and a capability to clearly describe complex analyses

  • Ability to obtain and maintain TREAT certifications/qualifications

  •   Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" 

Job Information:

  •   Salary Grade PR0300 - 220 ($107,520 - $177,336)/ PR0400 -230 ($121,212 - $206,232)
  •   Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth proven experience and skills

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment
