04/03/2024Job Summary: Organizes and directs the activities of the district pupil transportation program, assures proper maintenance of district buses, vehicles, and equipment, and repairs and diagnoses mechanical defects on various gasoline and diesel-powered buses, trucks, automobiles, and other electrical vehicles and equipment.
Work Hours: 8 Hours/Day - 12 month position
Monday - Friday 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Salary Range: Range 16: $5,110 - $6,212 / Monthly Salary
Minimum Qualifications & Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- California State Driver's license - Class B or higher.
- California State School Bus Driver's Certificate.
- Completion of a school bus driver training program.
- Current Medical Examiner's Certificate.
- Safe driving record and one (1) year of experience in the transportation of school children
(DMV printout required). - Five (5) years of journeyman-level experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is desired.
- Knowledge of principles of internal combustion and diesel engines.
- Knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and equipment used to maintain and repair mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge of the provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation
of vehicles in the transportation of school children. - Knowledge of the District boundaries and geography.
- Familiar with bus operations according to state, federal, and district regulations.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical defects and make necessary repairs to mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Ability to use required tools and equipment safely and skillfully.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to plan and estimate needs and to operate a garage efficiently within budget limitations.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with school employees and administrators.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Good physical condition as determined by pre-employment physical relative to the physical requirements of the job.
Essential Functions:
- Performs skilled-level mechanical repair and maintenance on large school buses andother District automotive and groundskeeping equipment and does related work as required.
- Diagnoses and repairs mechanical defects on school buses, trucks, automobiles, and other gasoline/diesel/electric operated mechanical equipment.
- Ensures all District vehicles meet safety requirements and smog certification.
- Inspects District mechanical equipment; plans and carries out a scheduled preventative maintenance program.
- Keeps records of work performed on all vehicles and equipment
- Train transportation department staff in the use of equipment, including that which requires certification to operate, vehicle code requirements, emergency procedures, use of tools, products, and safe driving and work practices.
- Develop and maintain a continuous personnel training program; instruct new and
- continuing drivers with current laws, driving techniques, and student control procedures;
and maintain driver training records as required. - Confer and advise transportation, school, and administrative personnel concerning student behavior problems.
- Coordinates special repair work with contractors.
- Makes contact with parts dealers to order needed parts and supplies.
- Makes emergency road calls.
- Maintains shop and bus parking facilities in clean and orderly condition.
- When not engaged in the above activities or when needed, assists as required in various maintenance work throughout the District involving heavy labor and semi-skilled and skilled tasks.
- Drives school bus as an emergency driver as needed.
- Responsible for establishing, assigning, and maintaining routes and schedules for the efficiency of operation and use of buses. Manages current and accurate routing sheets for bus drivers, including substitutes. Communicates with district staff and parents concerning bus routes and schedules.
- Receives, resolves, and collaborates with district staff and parents regarding bus routes, schedules, service inquiries, issues, and complaints.
- Supports Special Need Students and Individual Educational Plans (IEP) matters.
- Monitors driving assignments, including extracurricular field trips.
- Monitors checkpoints, and communicates the determination of fog delays and other inclement weather conditions. Monitors drug/alcohol testing of bus drivers and maintains drug/alcohol testing files.
- Monitors Bus Driver Certifications - current medical, special licenses, certificates, and other required documentation to ensure correct and current documents are on file and available for inspection.
- Be available as needed after regular working hours for emergency equipment repair and district vehicle roadside assistance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
