The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is a nationally recognized municipal transportation agency at the leading edge of multi-modal transportation. With approximately 1,200 dedicated staff, SDOT maintains an operational presence 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in all weather conditions to serve and ensure Seattle's public mobility.
Position Overview:
SDOT has an exciting opportunity for a Civil Engineering Review Supervisor (under the city's class title of Civil Engineer Supervisor). This position will provide an opportunity to truly make an impact within our surrounding communities. The Civil Engineering Review Supervisor will directly control the way our city is built over the next several years. This position leads and serves the Transportation Operations Division's plan review team with authority and responsibility for both internal SDOT projects and external development projects. The position will supervise engineers, specialists, and other professionals responsible for the complex and difficult Civil Engineering work necessary for planning, designing, and constructing projects within the city's right of way. This position reports to the Operations and Review Manager.
  • Leads a team of the division's plan review coordinators, with overall program responsibility for reviewing safety, mobility, access, and activation impacts for all private developments, SDOT projects, and partner agency projects.
  • Reviews traffic and engineering impacts, while ensuring compliance with traffic standards.
  • Ensures that projects support safety, access, and mobility for people using all travel modes.
  • Ensure all projects are consistent with the city's local plans, master transportation plan, and modal elements.
  • Makes recommendations and decisions to help resolve modal conflicts.
  • Provides feedback and development support for updates and interpretation of citywide and small-area transportation plans.
  • Supports safe and effective activation of the public rights of way through review and partnership with SDOT's public space management team including temporary and long-term permits.
  • Oversees and performs evaluation and response for internal and external inquiries about non-arterial operations and for uses of the ROW outside of traditional vehicle-based mobility.
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice in keeping with the City's Race and Social Justice Initiative.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires the equivalent of a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology and six years of professional Civil Engineering experience, including two years of supervisory or project management experience.
  • Registration as a professional Engineer in the state of Washington
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:
  • Two years of demonstrated supervisory experience of traffic operations and or project management staff.
  • Experience working in public service environment.
  • Demonstrates excellent scheduling, routing, organizing and prioritizing skills and abilities.
  • Demonstrates ability to positively contribute to employers' success in safe work practices and improve productivity and availability both individually as well as with staff s/he supervises.
  • Familiarity with PROWAG, AADAG, Trafficware Synchro, Highway Capacity Manual, MUTCD, AASHTO/WSDOT Design Manual.
  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment with hybrid options at this time.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

The full salary range for this position is $ 62.74 - $ 72.75 Hourly.
