Job description

The Transit Planner works across the organization to review and maintain services and facilities within the service area. This position provides data and analysis to support short- and long-term decision making and planning for service innovation. The Transit Planner also coordinates special transportation projects and partners with external organizations on issues that may affect day-to-day ability to provide services due to construction and other foreseeable interruptions.

Gather, organize, interpret, and communicate detailed and accurate data related to bus stops and shelters, route schedules, ridership, operational characteristics, system performance, demographics, employment, development, traffic modeling, road construction projects, planned events, and trends which impact transit services. Key components of the job include:
  • Use ESRI software to create and maintain spatial features within a geodatabase while streamlining data collection, input, and schemas for reporting to management, board, and community groups in order to plan, implement, and evaluate service improvements.
  • Monitor developments and infrastructure improvements in current and anticipated service areas.
  • Coordinate dissemination of detour and other route change information.
  • Prepare, manage, and track agreements for maintaining poles, signage, shelters, lighting, and other associated improvements within public rights of way; ensure standard bus stop plans are maintained and are disseminated to developers and municipalities.
  • Support federal, state, regional, and local agency reporting, including Title VI plan compliance.
  • Identify local and regional transportation planning problems and priorities. Evaluate current service levels, design, and amenities, forecast service demand, and recommend improvements to projects, programs, and procedures to support organizational goals.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and partner agencies in the provision of passenger facilities, service signage, and ADA accessibility of facilities and services.
  • Lead efforts to study future service and/or operational innovations.
  • Attend meetings and trainings to remain current on operations and improve job performance. Interface with providers and other transportation agencies. Present information to board, committees, management, community partners, and professional meetings as necessary to communicate transportation proposals and gather input. Represents Metro in broad internal and external interagency initiatives.
  • Prioritize work, set deadlines, define objectives, measure success, and recommend solutions.
  • Participate in budgeting and strategic planning.

May perform other duties, as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in planning, civil engineering, geography, public administration, economics, mathematics, computer science, or related field.
  • Minimum three years' full-time, progressively responsible experience in public transportation, land use planning, grants management, mapping, data collection and analysis, or related field.
  • Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Experience with the principles and practice of data research, compilation, and reporting. Ability to define problems, establish facts, draw conclusions, and effectively communicate information.
  • Expert computer skills, including Microsoft Office, GIS, map creation, graphics, and other current computer applications. Aptitude for learning to use complex software applications. Experience with transit software programs preferred.
  • Ability to develop and nurture strong, productive relationships with all levels within the organization, respecting established processes and fostering an environment of mutual respect.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to a variety of audiences. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
  • Strong organizational and prioritizing skills. Good skills in listening, meeting deadlines, working independently, and collaborating with others.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license.Experience in route design, service scheduling, and ADA compliance preferred
