Job Description

Trail Crew Members assist with the construction, maintenance, and restoration of various natural surface trails throughout the parks district. They will also be expected to assist with the Trail Signage Initiative, leading volunteer work days, and supporting conservation corps efforts.

Essential Functions:

  1. Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required. All Cleveland Metroparks employees must be prepared to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required.
  2. Performs semi-skilled and, as capable, skilled work in one or more of the following job areas: general repair, mechanical, vehicle mechanical and maintenance, construction, carpentry, electrical, heavy equipment operation, plumbing, or horticulture.
    1. Assists staff to analyze major and minor problems in assigned work.
    2. Anticipates problems and recommends solutions for effective work product.
    3. Assists or completes assigned work.
    4. Completes and documents service report orders.
    5. Performs daily maintenance checks, and/or preventive maintenance, as assigned.
  3. Reports task accomplishments to supervisor.
  4. Demonstrates understanding of principles and skills required in producing quality work product.
  5. Assists with decision making for trail routing, construction, and maintenance of natural surface trails: Designs and proposes reroutes; creates details and specifications of trails; meets with Trails Development Manager and stakeholders to approve plans consistent with surrounding park initiatives; resolves trail issues and problems
  6. Maintains supplies, hardware and equipment related to production and work area.
  7. Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
  8. Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  9. Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.
  10. Implements the Park District's Trail Signage Guidelines, including planning, layout installation and monitoring for trail way finding and user etiquette signage throughout the park district.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred in environmental science, ecology, landscape architecture, planning, or a related field from an accredited college or university; previous trail building experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license under the laws of the State of Ohio.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solving, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.
  • Strong Leadership Skills: must be able to support other Crew Members and volunteer work crews through the completion of trail construction tasks.
  • Ability to utilize basic trail building hand tools for training and instructing volunteers & other Crew Members
  • Proficient wayfinding abilities, including map and compass skills.
  • Excellent field skills, must be able to work in remote sections of the park, on and off trail, in all weather conditions, independently if necessary.
  • Ability to use hand and small power tools to complete trail maintenance and improvement projects while overseeing volunteers & other Crew Members.
  • Experience utilizing GPS unit and GIS programs.

Work Days:  Monday - Thursday
