Traffic Engineer

We are pleased to offer the opportunity to work within the DuPage County Division of Transportation (DOT) as a Traffic Engineer. The DOT operates an Ethernet-based Central Signal System of more than 325 county-owned traffic signals, including direct connections to four municipal partners and the state, as well as more than 150 pan-tilt-zoom cameras.
Remote work is available upon completion of a 6-month probationary period and supervisor approval.

Responsibilities include:

• Prepares for various Traffic Engineering analyses and studies, including warrant analyses, safety studies, speed studies, and capacity analyses and intersection design studies.
• Investigates, researches and recommends improvements to high crash locations or sections of roadways and intersections with long delays to traffic
• Manages the design, maintenance, and operations of county traffic signals utilizing the County's Central Signal System, the county's Electrical Maintenance Contract, various consultant contracts, and ongoing partnerships with municipalities and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
• Oversees requests for new or modified access to the County Highway System or improvements/modifications within the County right-of-way through the permitting process
• Recommends items for inclusion into the Division of Transportation annual and long range improvement plans
• Develops and implements programs to expand the County's Central Signal System to continually enhance traffic operations, including using advanced strategies such as signal performance measures (SPMs) and other ITS-related technologies
• Represents the County on various regional committees and at meetings with other public agencies
• Manages the collection and analysis of data and prepares responses to requests from Township Highway Commissioners for traffic control devices and speed limit studies
• Supervises and manages engineers and engineering technicians engaged in the collection and analysis of a variety of data pertaining to Traffic Engineering for the County Highway System

Requirements include the following experience or equivalent combination of training and experience:

• Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
• Eight (8) years of Traffic Engineering or related experience, which included two (2) years of supervisory experience
• This position requires registration as an Illinois Professional Engineer.
• Must possess and maintain in good standing a valid Illinois Driver's license
• Preferred candidate will hold a PTOE certification
