General Description
The City of Madison is looking to hire a Traffic Control Maintenance Worker. This position provides the installation and on-going maintenance of traffic devices, with a goal of maintaining efficient movement of people, goods and vehicles safely and efficiently throughout the City of Madison. This is semi-skilled public works construction and maintenance work, which includes making, installing, and maintaining street and traffic signs, traffic paint, and semi-permanent pavement markings, work zone set-up and the installation of Traffic Control for special events.

7:30AM - 3:30PM, Monday - Friday

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Install, repair, and maintain traffic and parking signs and associated Traffic Control equipment
  • Install signs for new streets, street reconstruction projects, and perform new sign installations.
  • Perform routine sign repairs and maintenance.
  • Install and remove temporary signing and marking for traffic detours and special events.
  • Assist Sign Painters in manufacturing signs.
  • Repair and recycle sign materials, support brackets, and associated equipment.
Install, repair, and maintain painted and semi-permanent pavement markings
  • Install, repair, and maintain painted street markings such as centerlines, lane lines, curb markings, crosswalks, stop lines, etc.
  • Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of semi-permanent pavement markings such as centerlines, lane lines, crosswalks, stop lines, etc.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of centerline, curb marking, crosswalk and semi-permanent marking machines and associated equipment.
Miscellaneous work activities
  • Install and remove barricades and Traffic Control for parades, special events, and emergencies.
  • Install and repair guard rails, roadside guideposts, roadway delineators, and bicycle related facilities.
  • Complete daily work orders.
  • Provide general direction and training to hourly/seasonal employees as required.
  • Snow and ice removal.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • One (1) year of varied public works maintenance and repair experience.
AND
  • Coursework in mechanics, welding and/or machine shop practices.
Depending on the number of applicants, random selection may be used to determine who proceeds to the interview process following a screening for minimum qualifications.
If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements listed above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:
Two (2) years of experience applying the following:
  • Mechanical principles, troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Maintenance and repair methods and materials.
  • Computers, asset management software and computer-based equipment.
  • Common hand tools and standard equipment used in public works maintenance, grounds care and conservation park work and snow/ice removal.
Familiarity with:
  • Digger's Hotline policies and procedures.
  • Work zone safety and hazards related to working in the road right-of-way.
  • Safety procedures in handling hazardous materials.

  • Operate a wide variety of aerial lift trucks, skid loaders, trenchers, and excavating equipment.
  • Operate a variety of construction equipment and power tools, including but not limited to: air hammers, chain saws, pipe threader, concrete hammer drill, concrete partner saw, welder, cutting torch, tower and platform lift vehicles, air compressor, portable generator, skidsteer, ride on mowers, toolcats, and attachments; pneumatic tools, magnetic locator, portable communications equipment, metal shear, punch press, sand blaster, etc.
  • Comprehend and accurately perform work assignments from schematics, specifications, plans, written and/or verbal instructions.
  • Work independently or as part of a crew, and be able to effectively communicate with others.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Class B Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement. The successful candidate must have passed the written portion of the relevant Department of Transportation testing process before starting employment. A condition of continued employment is passage of the skills portion of the test and obtaining the required operator's license within 6 months from the date of hire.
Physical requirements:
  • Engage in strenuous physical activities and perform in a variety of adverse weather conditions and/or across uneven terrain on a daily basis.
  • Work at heights from a ladder or platform.
  • Lift/carry objects up to 50 lbs. routinely, and up to 75 lbs. on occasion.
  • Climb, bend, sit, squat, stoop, kneel, walk, or lift arms overhead to perform work for extended periods of time.
  • Work at various heights from aerial trucks and/or ladders
  • Work evenings, weekends, and overtime as assigned.

Leave
Vacation is earned upon starting employment and can be used after completion of probation. The general vacation schedule is below.
0-3 years 10 work days of vacation

After 27 years 27 days
Employees earn 3.5 personal days in addition to vacation.
Employees receive eight official paid holidays (New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day), as well as 3 paid leave days (the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve).
