Purpose of Position
JOB SUMMARY
The job duties of the Traffic Control Technician include but are not limited to: provide Traffic Control for highway/bridge maintenance & construction projects and provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to County residents and the general public. A Traffic Control Technician may be assigned, initially, to only one area, however, as length of service increases, a Traffic Control Technician will be expected to perform work in other areas as needed.
2024 Season begins: April 29th 2024 until late October 2024.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties described below are indicative of what the seasonal Traffic Control Technician might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County ordinances for the position of Traffic Control Technician. This is not an exhaustive list of job responsibilities and therefore other duties may be assigned:
Operation Functions:
  • Safely operate pickup truck with Traffic Control trailer while traveling to and from assigned work zones.
  • Perform Traffic Control duties including setting up Traffic Control devices, daily inspection of Traffic Control setups, flagging work zones, maintaining devices, moving devices, and tear down of Traffic Control setups.
  • Communicate with supervisors and other highway operators to coordinate Traffic Control operations.
  • Identify required Traffic Control devices for each work zone setup.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance to assigned machinery and equipment as directed.
  • Respond to weather situations including, high water, washouts, and others as directed.
  • Respond to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles, and others as directed.
  • Maintain shop yard and grounds including mowing, trimming, sweeping and shoveling.
  • Operate assigned vehicles and tools for highway and bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Work with supervisor and other employees to ensure that Traffic Control is in place per standards.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of part- or full-time work experience required.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Wisconsin Flagging Certification training is required and will be provided upon hire.

  • Experience in highway construction trades is preferred.

  • A cell phone is required.

Pre-employment and Post- Offer Testing:
  • Successfully pass a post-employment-offer physical exam, audiogram, and agility screening.
  • Failure to pass these will result in the employment offer being revoked.

Chippewa County offers the following benefits for Limited Term Employees (LTE):
  • Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS - ETF) - Depending on the number of hours worked and/or previous WRS work experience, an employee may be eligible and required to contribute 6.9% (2024) with a County match of 6.9% for a total of 13.8%. This percentage may change each year based on state requirements.
