TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

NOTE: INTERNAL POSTING. OPEN TO TPWD LAW ENFORCEMENT EMPLOYEES ONLY.

Under the direction of the GWTC Academy Captain, the Academy Lieutenant is responsible for wildlife, conservation, and natural resources enforcement work, including, managing, evaluating and assisting with administrative and operational activities related to conservation and other law enforcement training as assigned at the Texas Game Warden Training Academy.  Responsibilities include overseeing cadet administration, field in-service training, analysis, and development; presenting training programs and activities and providing guidance and leadership to other personnel.  Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

Graduation from the Texas Game Warden Training Academy.

 

Experience:

Six years experience as a Game Warden from the date of graduation from the Game Warden Training Academy.

 

Licensure:       

Basic TCOLE Instructor Certification

Commissioned as a Game Warden by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Must possess a current license as a peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Must possess a valid class "C" Texas driver's License.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon maintaining required licenses and certifications.

 

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Education:

One additional year as a Game Warden beyond the minimum requirement may substitute for thirty semester hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of adult learning theories;

Knowledge of statutes, proclamations, regulations and policies related to the enforcement of all provisions of the Texas Penal Code and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Code, and all regulatory acts adopted under the authority of the Parks and Wildlife Code regarding, State Parks, fisheries resources, game animal resources, game bird resources, non-game resources, furbearing resources and provisions of the Texas Water Safety Act;

Knowledge of the Texas Disaster Plan, including TPWD and regional responsibilities during a disaster, in order to effectively handle the responsibilities of being assigned to the District Emergency Operation Center during emergencies and disasters;

Skill in applying adult learning theories in presenting cadet and in-service training learning objectives to students;

Skill in identifying needs to update current curriculum to reflect changing TCOLE mandates and learning objectives and other professional developmental lesson objectives;

Skill in identifying special Information & Education program and staff training needs;

Skill in developing and delivering presentations and training material and courses to meet identified needs;

Skill in effectively communicating and dealing with other people to achieve work related goals and objectives of cadet and in-service training;

Skill in actively recruiting qualified and diverse applicants through education of the duties and responsibilities of a State Game Warden;

Skill in use of instructional software used in training presentations;

Skill in using sound judgment in making training decisions;

Skill in using computers to develop, maintain and monitor reports, records, documents and other information, including the development of lesson plans, performance evaluations, property inventories of cadets, tracking training equipment used in cadet instruction;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel, Adobe, PowerPoint, FMS, ePortal, SharePoint, and Outlook;

Skill in creating and managing correspondence, reports, documents and other forms of written communication;

Ability to apply agency, state and federal laws, statutes, regulations, proclamations, policies and procedures;

Ability to research and organize information to assist in the preparation and monitoring of regional budgets;

Ability to use agency and divisional purchasing procedures to facilitate regional purchasing and provide assistance to direct supervisor - Captain Game Warden and others as requested;

Ability to plan and organize workloads and priorities;

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate meetings, including agendas and logistical support;

Ability to function as the regional liaison in the Emergency Operation Center during a disaster;

Ability to function as the Divisional Armorer and Safety Officer;

Ability to evaluate, mentor, manage, supervise, and prepare cadets;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;

Required to adjust to changing schedules; 

Must reside within 50 air miles from the Game Warden Training Center;

Required to operate a State vehicle

Required to travel 20% with possible overnight stays;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
