Job Description
Under the direction of a Fire Captain, Battalion Chief, or any ranking officer, has direct command over a fire company or work unit on an assigned shift. Performs general fire-fighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, and in the maintenance of fire department equipment and quarters. Also responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities with and without supervision. Performs hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke and cramped surroundings. Work requires a knowledge and understanding of firefighting methods which is gained by experience and training.
Duties and Responsibilities:- Plans, evaluates, and directs ESD station personnel, policies, programs, and operations daily.
- Directs response to fire suppression and other emergencies to ensure the safety of personnel and the public.
- Assists with the development and enforcement of rules, regulations, and procedures in accordance with federal, state industry best practices, and policies.
- Assists with the coordination and collaboration of ESD activities.
- Assists with the preparation of the annual ESD budget and assists with purchase of some fire department equipment and apparatus.
- Oversees assigned maintenance records and reports associated with fire, inspections, emergency medical calls, personnel, equipment, and supplies for local, state, and federal use.
- Assists with the preparation of studies, reports, and recommendations as deemed necessary.
- Assists with communication, coordination, and collaboration with community, ESD Administration, and officials of other jurisdictions as deemed necessary.
- May represent the ESD as deemed by the Emergency Services Chief at local, state, and regional meetings.
- May act in a higher capacity as Captain and will be expected to perform all the required and related duties for that rank.
- Evaluates assigned personnel under direct supervision.
- Operate a computer utilizing various software packages and electronic mail.
- All other duties as assigned for the successful execution and/or completion of various projects whether or not specifically assigned.
The candidate must have a minimum of 4 years of fire service experience within an ESD, county, or municipal fire department. In addition, the candidate should have some experience of informal leadership by managing assigned projects.
Preferred SkillsThe candidate is preferred to have a college degree, and a minimum of 5 years of service within an ESD, county or municipal fire department. The preferred candidate will be certified as Driver/Operator – Engine, Fire Officer I, Intermediate Structural Firefighter, and Incident Safety Officer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of the principles and practices of firefighting,
including knowledge of hydraulics as related to fire fighting. - Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the various
types of apparatus and equipment used by the Fire Department,
together with the ability to supervise the effective use of such
equipment and apparatus. - Knowledge of fire training practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Fire Department.
- Knowledge of first aide and resuscitation principles and
practices. - Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies and direct the
work of subordinates in emergency situations. - Ability to plan, supervise and coordinate the work of others.
- Ability to use, operate and care for firefighting equipment.
- Ability to gain physical strength and agility sufficient to
perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.

Employees working in this position are also frequently required to function well in emergency incident settings, making proper judgment calls, based sound risk/benefit assessments and resource allocation. Must be able to work in frequent stressful environments with minimal supervision.
Work environmentThe work is typically performed at a station house except while at a fire or emergency scene. At a fire scene, the employee may be exposed to EXTREME noise, dust, dirt, irritating chemicals, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and hazardous situations. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
