Full Time 1st Shift Monday-Friday 8 am-5 pm 

Wage: $17.10 an hour non-exempt

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Native Connections Project Coordinator, provide primary prevention education regarding substance abuse and suicide in youth, targeting the Saginaw Chippewa Indian tribal community, schools, surrounding area. Present culturally appropriate behavioral health prevention programs which reach the target populations in all aspects of the community including but not limited to: schools, community organizations and tribal departments.  Must be culturally sensitive and emphasis should be placed on incorporating cultural components in the prevention programming.   All Behavioral Health staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely Native Connections Project Director, Data Analyst and advisory boards to identify and plan effective prevention strategies and programs.     
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of prevention programming through the use of surveys, focus groups, and culturally appropriate processes.    
  • Provide information and education to the community through newsletter or newspaper articles, informational booths or speaking engagements.
  • Represent the Behavioral Health Native Connections team by collaborating with other agencies and tribal departments on prevention-related committees and activities.    
  • Provide referral services for individuals who are in need of substance abuse or mental health counseling. 
  • Complete monthly activity logs.   
  • Attend all meetings and trainings as approved by supervisor for the purpose of upgrading knowledge and expertise for all job duties.    
  • Adhere to client confidentiality and comply with department policies and federal regulations under the Privacy rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times.  Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:

  • Contact with tribal youth, adults, families, the general public, social services, court or legal systems and other agencies and providers deemed appropriate to accomplish effective services and treatment exercising discretion and judgment. 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, Suicide Prevention and Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Recovery.
  • Knowledge of appropriate resources and referral agencies.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Skill in coordinating and planning programs and other educational and outreach activities.
  • Ability to present educational programs in front of large and small groups and create educational materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to develop to identify, plan and implement culturally-appropriate research-based    prevention programming.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Required to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Frequent walking and standing throughout the community to provide prevention programming. 
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

 

Work Environment:

  • Normal office environment, community and schools.
  • Mandated reporting of abuse and neglect can lead to personal challenges with exposure to victims of abuse.
  • Daily routine could require frequent visits to schools, other agencies and scheduled community events. 
  • High incidence of exposure to communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens evident in mental health and substance field. 
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required. 
  • Travel may be required.

 

Minimum Requirements 
  • Associate's degree in Human Services or related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Experience with Native American traditions and cultural processes.
  • Experience in working collaboratively across multiple organizations and community systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Human Services, or related field.
  • One year experience in program planning and presenting prevention education.
  • Experience working directly with Native American communities. 

 

License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Obtain HIPAA certification within five business days of hire.
  • Must have a valid State of Michigan Driver's License with the proper designation required for the vehicle utilized to perform the job duties; must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver's License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
