Health Educator/Prevention Specialist
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education or related field (preference to candidates with previous experience in outreach/prevention or community health work). Must have a broad understanding of community resources, services, and prevention programs available. Must possess valid state of Michigan driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
Supervision: Prevention & Outreach Manager
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
To provide various health education and substance abuse prevention programs to patients, students, employees, and community members. Candidate should have the ability to communicate well with effective listening skills and utilize language appropriately with confidence.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Collaborates with schools, parent-teacher groups, civic organizations, and community organizations to provide information and awareness on alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other health education programs.
· Plans and participates in health fairs, expos, and other community events for the purpose of providing substance abuse education and prevention programs.
· Participates in program planning and attends staff meetings and conferences/workshops as appropriate.
· Applies strategies for continuous quality improvement.
· Research federal, state and community opportunities including writing grants, proposals, etc.
· Prepares news releases, reports, pamphlets and various materials regarding health issues and health center activities.
· Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
· Travel to multiple locations for Sterling Area Health Center as necessary.
Skills and Abilities:
· Communicates in writing and orally, in person and through electronic means with proficiency.
· Uses language and examples appropriate to the age level of the client.
· Work collaboratively and effectively within a team, including fellow Community Health Workers.
· General computer knowledge and capability to use a computer.
· Acts in accordance with laws and procedures governing confidentiality, release of information, consent etc.
