Job description

TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors

Executive Director

The TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors

Founded in 1991, The TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (TLC) is a health-related human services organization dedicated to supporting the 1-in-20 individuals experiencing body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) through awareness, health education, clinical training, and research. TLC supports a highly underserved and often misunderstood population who present with complex behavioral health needs and body-focused repetitive behaviors, including hair pulling, skin picking, nail biting, cheek biting, and other related behaviors.

  • TLC is the only worldwide organization dedicated to providing health education, clinical training, and ongoing research to support people experiencing BFRBs, their family members, and loved ones.
  • Through health education programming, TLC provides the BFRB community - from babies to seniors, parents to clinicians, in the United States and around the globe - with access to expert level guidance and connection that transforms lives.
  • TLC recently launched the first-ever BFRB Community Health Needs Assessment & Impact Survey designed specifically for the BFRB community to gather data to improve quality of life. Data gathered from the CHNA survey will be shared with public policy makers, public health leaders, doctors, clinicians, educators, and more to help close gaps in systems supporting people with BFRBs, while diversifying funding.
  • TLC's Virtual Professional Training Institute (VPTI) is a specialized, one-of-a-kind, comprehensive CBT-based training for medical and therapeutic providers interested in becoming more knowledgeable in treating patients presenting with hair pulling, skin picking, nail biting, cheek biting, and associated behaviors. The self-guided, 13-hour course found nowhere else.
  • TLC is also recognized for investing in pioneering research through its Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors Precision Medicine Initiative (BPM) and more. To date, the BPM research team has identified five distinct hair pulling and skin picking subtypes, and has made significant progress in analyzing genetics data. The BPM research project's goal is to generate greater understanding about the underlying biology of BFRBs, while also providing data that assists in securing NIMH-funded grants to further the study of BFRBs and BFRB treatments.
