Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary
As Editor-in-Chief of The Panther, you are expected to wear many hats, juggle multiple projects
and lead a dynamic group of journalists all while maintaining immaculate media integrity. The
Panther is the leading source for both campus and Orange County news, and as its audience
grows, so does the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief to be wholeheartedly dedicated to its
cause.
Responsibilities
While the day to day operations of The Panther vary due to the stories and reporting on deck,
the Editor-in-Chief can expect the following from the position:
- Reporting at least 2 to 3 stories themselves per week
- Leading all breaking news coverage
- Editing every single story, every cutline, every tease. Nothing gets published without
passing the Editor-in-Chief's desk first
- Maintaining up to date with AP Style changes and demands
- Dedicating themselves to The Panther first, above any other campus affiliation
- Remaining on-call 24/7
- Dedicating nights and weekends to editing
- Maintaining an orderly staff and providing immaculate leadership
- Setting a positive and motivated tone during all staff meetings and interactions
- Maintaining a balance between friend and boss - the Editor-in-Chief is friendly, but
committed to maintaining professionalism
- Balancing the budget and working with the business manager to stay on track financially
- Working with the printer to maintain scheduling and printing costs
- Working with the web editor to keep up to date with website domain charges and
maintenance
- Planning and coordinating semesterly journalism conferences
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with faculty, administrators and staff
Every day as the Editor-in-Chief is different, and although the expectations above can appear to
be extensive, they are just a handful of the responsibilities that the Editor-in-Chief is expected to
fulfill. It cannot be stressed enough that this is a full time job, and it needs to be approached by
the applicant as such. The chosen candidate for this position will have needed to prove their
reliability and dedication to The Panther, have excellent follow through, a professionalism that
will convey to the rest of the staff, and a determination to get the job done perfectly, every time.
Required Qualifications
  • Have prior experience working for The Panther.
  • Must be dedicated to Panther news goals, be able to work within and meet deadlines.

Desired Qualifications
  • Oversee all aspects of newspaper production, finance, and editorial.
