Laney College

Merritt College

Berkeley City College
Berkeley City College is just blocks from the University of California - Berkeley. The energetic new urban campus stands on the cutting edge of community college education. University preparation and occupational training classes form the core of the Berkeley City College curriculum, which also features model programs in fields as diverse as American Sign Language, Biotechnology, and Multimedia.
The new campus is located in downtown Berkeley, and houses state-of-the-art facilities assuring that the college meets the educational needs of students and the community. Job Description Summary
Under direction, the Student Health Services Nurse will provide Health Services care and case management to students at the Peralta Colleges. Such services will include disease protection, prevention, and health promotion. Other responsibilities will include facilitating medical and mental Health Services and making appropriate referrals for prompt treatment io limit or prevent disability; and to perform other related duties in support of Student Health.
Note: The person hired must meet the State Minimum Qualifications for any/each discipline s/he is assigned to teach.
Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide Registered Nursing services to the Student Health Service Program.
• Assist college medical and mental health teams in providing health care, including stress reduction, to the college student population.
• Assess physical health needs and offer appropriate services and/or referrals.
• Assist in or provide crisis intervention and health education.
• Refer student to appropriate campus and community resources for health service needs.
• Provide follow-up (care/case management) on students, and medical treatment and services as needed.
• Make appropriate referrals to private practitioners and community agencies for long-term chronic health needs.
• Consult with and advise faculty and other staff in assisting students with health care needs.
• Follow public health protocols for communicable disease control (tuberculosis screening).
• Provide emergency first aid assessment
• Respond as a member of the Disaster and Crisis Alert Team to provide medical care and triage and to work with community agencies.
• Conduct programs for blood pressure screening, influenza clinics, cholesterol screening, and health maintenance services.
• Assist with orientation for new Registered Nurses and Student Health staff
• Alert the Dean of Student Services and the Director of Health Services of possible areas of health concern requiring the need for intervention
• Assist in formulating policies, procedures, and protocol for the Student Health service.
• Participate in college committees relevant to health and safety.
• Evaluate clinic standards of care related to Student Health Services Policies and Procedures from licensed and unlicensed health care providers, according to the California Nurse Practice Act.
• Inventory, requisition, and keep current all necessary nursing equipment and supplies:
• Perform other related job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in Nursing
2. A current Registered Nursing License issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing
3. Two (2) years of experience within the last five (5) years in professional nursing, preferably in an acute care setting.
4. Current CPR certification
5. Crisis intervention skills and experience
6. Knowledge of the application, principles, and procedures for Registered Nurses under the California Nurse Practice Act
7. Knowledge of the causes and means of transmission and methods of control of communicable diseases.
8. Knowledge of community resources available for medical referral services.
9. Understanding, sensitivity, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of Peralta's community college students
MUST ALSO SUBMIT A CURRENT REGISTERED NURSING LICENSE AND CPR CERTIFICATION IN THE TRAINING/CERTIFICATION DOCUMENTATION AREA
Desirable Qualifications
• Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate health care programs and standards
• Ability to administer prescribed medical treatments, laboratory tests, and medication within college and/or District policies and procedures as appropriate.
• Ability to set priorities without direct supervision and perform autonomously in an ambulatory nurse-directed health care clinic as appropriate.
• Ability /to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, students, and the community.
• Bilingual ability in English, Spanish, Chinese, or Vietnamese.
• Public Health Nurse Certification
