Job Description:
The Maintenance Assistant (Painter) will help the Trade Specialist (Painter) in the supervision of the summer student paint crew. The Maintenance Assistant (Painter) will join the facilities department for the summer months to work with Trade Specialist (Painter) and the students to prepare and paint primarily residential buildings, academic buildings if time allows, in preparation for the fall 2023.
Illustrative duties:
- Provide supervision for the summer student painters working in the residence halls or academic buildings.
- Collaborate with, and receive directions from the Trade Specialist (Painter).
- Identifies areas of repair needed before painting takes place.
- Contacts work order system for repairs that are not undertaken by paint crew
- Checks to see that repaired areas are complete and finished before assigning areas to be painted.
- Lay out work for the day and assign work to student painters.
- Train students to use masking and drop clothes to minimize paint in areas not to be painted.
- Provide training to students who need help improving their skills in their assigned tasks.
- Collect and deliver supplies to the work site.
- Secure painting equipment and clean tools as needed
- Inspect areas after painting for completeness and quality.
- Work with custodial staff to have furniture moved in areas to be painted and then moved back when painting is complete
- Removes electrical wall plates prior to painting and replaces when painting is complete.
- Arranges, assembles and erects scaffolds and ladders at work site.
- Instructs student painters on proper set-up and use of ladders and scaffolding.
- Address poor work habits with student employees on the paint crew. Notify Trade Specialist (Painter) and if need be Manager of Building and Grounds of repeat or uncorrected behavior.
- As needed, inform the Trade Specialist (Painter) of time and attendance issues.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Non-competitive: Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate twoyear technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
- Must possess a valid New York State driver's license.
