Austin Animal Center is the municipal shelter for the City of Austin and unincorporated Travis County, providing shelter to thousands of animals annually as well as providing animal protection and pet resource services. We accept stray and owned animals regardless of age, health, species or breed. Our goal is to place all adoptable animals in forever homes through adoption, foster care, or rescue partner groups.

Love working with dogs, even the naughty ones? Have a background in animal behavior? Love helping dogs “be dogs”? Have a positive attitude and are eager to make a difference? Perfect! Now’s your chance to become part of the lifesaving team at Austin Animal Center!
As a member of our Animal Care team, you will spend your time walking dogs, running playgroups, evaluating dogs for various behavior issues, working with shy, fearful, or reactive dogs, and working with a team to help ensure that every dog gets their daily needs met. You will spend time in the play yard, one-on-one with dogs, researching past incidents, and assessing the needs of our population.
We have a great team that works both independently and very closely with each other on a daily basis. This job also offers and encourages growth of your skills on the job.
The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with different species, breeds, and sizes of dogs. They must be able to use good judgment with dogs with unknown or unpredictable temperaments. They must possess great interpersonal skills (including customer service) to help animals find their forever homes and to occasionally diffuse difficult situations.

- Animal Service Office worksite locations are tobacco-free. Use of tobacco products and/or e-cigarettes is not permitted on any ASO worksite – including construction sites, parking lot, or in any personal vehicle located on the premises.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
- Demonstrated comfort working with different breeds, sizes, and types of dogs.
- Demonstrated experience working in a fast paced, high stress environment with competing priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to use good judgment with animals with unknown temperaments.
- Professional experience in working with dogs.
- Experience in positive reinforcement based training and playgroups/dog socialization.
- Ability to have a flexible work schedule.
- A desire to continue learning and growing, while also sharing your knowledge with others.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Cleans, disinfects and maintains shelter areas as assigned.
- Feeds, waters, bathes, dips and exercises animals. Provides humane sheltering services in compliance with State minimum standards and shelter policies.
- Safely and humanely handles animals, of unknown health and temperament.
- Assists in monitoring the medical/behavioral status of animals and performs related health care activities.
- Contributes to the programs and services that support the shelter’s live outcome goal.
- Loads dead animals onto trucks.
- Ensures the safety of animals and people in the shelter.
- Accurately maintains all required records in the shelter’s database.
- Provides information to the public.
- Assists in unloading trucks, stocking shelter areas and storing materials. Assists in preparation, transport and documentation of specimens for rabies testing.
- Maintains facility and grounds in a clean, neat and organized manner.
Responsibilities – Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
