Job description

Location: Dorchester, with travel to various program sites in Greater Boston

Hours: 5-10 hours/week; Potential schedules: Monday-Friday afternoons/evenings and Saturday mornings/afternoons

Girls’ LEAP MissionWe work to disrupt the violence that surrounds all girls and nonbinary youth by amplifying theirvoices, emboldening their courage, and imparting critical life and self-defense skills so they cantake on challenges with confidence.

Role Description: The Teen Mentor supports the mission of Girls’ LEAP by assisting in teaching, contributing to small groupdiscussions, and demonstrating dedication to the values and philosophy of Girls’ LEAP as well as a commitment to learning the skills necessary to advance through the Girls’ LEAP Teen Mentor Program. Teen Mentors build leadership skills by teaching younger and near-aged girls and gender expansiveyouth in Girls’ LEAP programs. They also raise community awareness about the violence that girls face. Teen Mentors are paid hourly and work 20-25 hours per week during the summer, 5-15 hours per weekduring the academic year. Teen Mentors gain valuable life skills including Increased confidence in personal safety

What does a Teen Mentor do?

  • Assists in teaching Girls' LEAP Community Programs, including physical self-defense andreflective social-emotional skills.
  • Engages in training and discussion on social justice topics relevant to Boston youth, such as racism, sexism, discrimination, violence, etc. - and what we can do about these issues.
  • May create content for Girls' LEAP's Instagram, Youtube, etc. about things that matter to thecommunity. Learn skills like video and music editing. Write poetry, draw, and take pictures.
  • Builds personal skills such as financial literacy and goal setting, and professional skills such asresume writing Receives academic support
  • Creates a project focusing on a community issue that addresses youth concerns

What training does a Teen Mentor receive?

  • Teen Mentors receive ~18-20 Hours in Physical Self-Defense & Social Emotional Skills initially
  • Teen Mentors also receive ~12 hours in culturally relevant, anti-racist, and gender inclusiveteaching methods
  • Continuous feedback & development opportunities in coaching, mentoring, professional development and communication skillsExperience

A Teen Mentor has/is:

❑ At least 14 years of age at the time of entrance into the Teen Mentor Program

❑ Enrolled in a public or private high school in the Greater Boston area

❑ Interest in working with young people ages 8-18

❑ Interest in leadership/community involvement

❑ Completed a Teen Mentor Program Applicant Training – a minimum of 18 hours of training inboth the Physical and Reflective SkillsCore CompetenciesCore Competencies required to fulfill the responsibilities of Teen Mentor include:

❑ Demonstrates familiarity with curriculum components and shield work

❑ Practices strength-based approach while working with young people and other staff

❑ Demonstrates leadership through active listening

❑ Willingly accepts direction and feedback

❑ Sets appropriate and clear boundaries with participants

❑ Applies 1:1 classroom management techniques (example: strategic placement in group to reduce side-talking)Responsibilities

A Teen Mentor:

❑ Contributes to small group discussions and activities with program participants

❑ Leads a portion or all of opening activity during program sessions

❑ Uses open ended questions to encourage participation

❑ Participates in physical demonstrations during programming

❑ Provides 1:1 physical instruction with program participants

❑ Participates fully as a bully [escape skills, verbal self-defense] in the Long Walk at the discretion of the Lead Teacher

❑ Asks questions of Lead Teacher in order to continue learning

❑ Acts as a role model and answers questions for participants

❑ Shows dedication/enthusiasm to work with girls

❑ Displays a consistent positive attitude

❑ Practices honest and clear communication

❑ Interacts respectfully and in a timely manner with staff both in and outside of program time

❑ Arrives on time for program prep period, and stays for the full program debrief period.

❑ Maintains flexibility and willingness to respond within changing program circumstances

❑ Attends and participates in all workshops during Teen Mentor program sessions

❑ Creates a Participatory Action Research project as part of the Teen Mentor program

❑ Communicate with teaching team around personal strengths and growth areas

❑ Interacts positively with families, site staff, and visitors

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $15.75 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 15 per week
