Overview
At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.
The Radiological Materials (RM) Group includes a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians conducting basic and applied research and development in the area of materials science. The group focuses on development and demonstration of unique materials and processes to address problems in the backend of the nuclear fuel cycle (waste treatment, immobilization, and disposal).
Responsibilities
This position will work with and assist scientists, engineers, senior technicians, and other collaborators in conducting the research and development (R&D) process in the general area of materials testing. The primary function of this position is to fabricate samples, operate analytical equipment, perform laboratory-based experiments, and provide technical coordination in support of a variety of R&D projects.
The work includes following procedures for operating test systems on the bench-top and in laboratory fume hoods involving hazardous material as well as toxic and flammable gases and liquids at high temperatures (> 1000 °C) and pressures. The work also includes following procedures to provide a high level of quality assurance (QA), which requires that accurate records be kept and maintained and that the laboratory and QA procedures are followed precisely.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Conduct work in a safe and secure manner under the direction of senior staff members
  • Follow instructions in completing tasks assigned by scientists, engineers, senior technicians, and mentors
  • Perform work effectively, efficiently, and to the quality required by the customer
  • Comply with all applicable policies, standards, subject areas, procedures, permits and other work instructions
  • Conduct research and development activities including standard technical procedures that range from routine to specialized, under technical supervision.
  • Operate in laboratory workspaces equipped with fume hoods, glove boxes and with specialized instrumentation in order to conduct research.
  • Document work in laboratory notebooks and other media and processing data acquired from testing
  • Accurately estimating time required to complete tasks, and meeting deadlines as assigned
  • Purchase chemicals and materials through the appropriate processes
  • Assist with the development of technical documents and presentations
  • Occasionally present experimental progress and measured data
  • Learn and operate a variety of specialized technical equipment (e.g., XRD, SEM, viscometers, pycnometer, etc.) to support specific project objectives
  • Follow written procedures for operating laboratory test systems involving high pressures, high temperatures, and hazardous chemicals

The position also involves the ability and willingness to occasionally work hours beyond normal working schedules including evenings and weekends.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma/GED and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • Technical Institute Graduate (TIG)/relevant AA degree or higher and 1 year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a chemical laboratory environment with common laboratory equipment and preparing samples for analysis
  • Adaptability to support a broad range of projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work with large teams
  • Experience being proactive to accomplish unique tasks in a laboratory environment with limited direction
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, implement, and compliantly execute the broad range of tasks
  • Working knowledge in material science or inorganic chemistry

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
  • Laboratory work will be performed in PNNL laboratory facilities under IOPS control and involves working with high temperatures (> 1000 °C) and pressures, selected hazardous chemicals (acids, bases, etc.), trace levels of hazardous materials (RCRA heavy metals), and fine powders (silica, nanoparticles, etc.).
  • The position will occasionally work hours beyond normal working schedules including evenings and weekends.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
