Job Description
The Materials, Chemical, and Computational Sciences (MCCS) directorate is seeking a Technical Project Manager to join our Research Operations (ResOps) team. In your role managing complex equipment procurements and installations for MCCS, you'll play a crucial role in supporting groundbreaking research across diverse fields such as battery development, photovoltaics, perovskites, fuel cells, nanotechnology, and renewable energy. This role is essential for ensuring safety and compliance requirements are met, budget and schedule are maintained, and research staff have the tools they need to conduct cutting edge research. The successful candidate will report to the MCCS Research Operations Director and will support projects in all technical areas within MCCS.
  • Technical Project Management:
    • Work with researchers and site operations to appropriately scope and plan equipment procurements and installations, managing interfaces between research and facility activities
    • Work with Environment, Safety & Health to understand requirements and ensure they are appropriately incorporated into the project
    • Ensure appropriate readiness activities are planned and conducted as part of commissioning and handoff to research
  • Design Coordinator:
    • In the new Work Planning and Control (WPC) system, ensure processes for assigned projects are followed, that assets are entered or updated in the system, and appropriate approvals are obtained.
    • Ensure changes in assigned projects are managed through the appropriate Management of Change process.
  • Other duties
    • Participate in plan of the week meeting with the MCCS Engineering and Informatics group to coordinate activities/ request resources
    • Participate in the MCCS Project Coordination Meeting for coordination across ResOps and Site Operations
    • Participate in the Capital Equipment and similar planning processes to plan and report on project status

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Project Management: Demonstrated experience in successfully managing projects related to the design, build, installation, or modification of research equipment.
  • Technical Background: Demonstrated understanding of the technical aspects of research equipment needed to facilitate effective communication with research staff.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with navigating and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and approval processes associated with research equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Documentation Skills: Proficient in producing and managing documentation required for research projects, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Collaboration: Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including researchers, engineers, EHS, and facility staff.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to address unforeseen challenges during the project lifecycle.
  • Budget & Schedule Management: Experience in successful budget & schedule management for research projects, including cost estimation, milestone development, and tracking.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders and vice versa.
  • Quality Assurance: Experience in implementing quality requirements to ensure research equipment and installations meet project needs.
  • Vendor Management: Experience in selecting and managing vendors for equipment procurement or modification services.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactive in identifying opportunities for process improvement and implementing best practices.

Job Profile: Professional III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
