Technical Design Duties:
Utilizing CAD software, create highly detailed drawings of exhibit experiences for production in our fabrication shop or by outside contractors.
Revise drawings as needed to meet project team expectations.
Understand and apply fabrication principles to drawings, so that components are stable, safe, and efficiently built.
Detail and prep files for fabrication on CNC machines or other robotic fabrication tools.
Assist the Design & Development Team as needed with less detailed design work (computer modeling, finish selection, etc)
Participate in project team meetings to lead discussions on exhibits, offering creative ideas and design suggestions for exhibit experiences.
Lead meetings and conversations with external clients and vendors as it relates to the technical designs of exhibits and exhibit components.
Understand the physical properties of various materials, including woods, metals, and plastics, and their best uses and limitations as it relates to exhibit production.
Collaborate with the Design team and Exhibit Production staff to ensure that prototype and finished designs are being rendered to specifications and meet overall project goals. Observe visitors during testing of prototype experiences.
Manage digital assets across multiple projects using file structures, version control systems, databases, and cloud based storage systems. Knowledge of Google Workspace and other project management software (e.g. Jira) required.
Understand and advocate for universal accessibility in the design of experiences.
Confer with conservators and project teams to determine how to handle an exhibit's environmental aspects, such as lighting, temperature, and humidity, so that objects will be protected and exhibits will be enhanced. Advise other team members as needed.
Understand and prioritize work to ensure that the workflow is efficient and in line with the project's goals and within the scope of the project team.
Adapt and apply new techniques and trends to create innovative experiences. Seek out new and emerging techniques to help assess the viability of their use in experiences.
