POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Teaching Assistant (TA) is responsible for ensuring that all unaccompanied children UC (Unaccompanied Children) receive educational assessments and a structured education per the Office of Refugees Resettlement (ORR). The Teaching Assistant will be responsible for maintaining a positive and appropriate educational environment that meets the intellectual and emotional needs of all children.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide educational services based on the individual academic development, literacy level, and linguistic ability of each unaccompanied child.

2. Conducting a small amount of formal classroom instruction provided adequate experience in the subject being taught.

3. Assist in the implementation of lesson plans. Organize, prepare, and inventory materials for daily instruction.

4. Provide youth with appropriate in-person, virtual learning activities and experiences in varying academic subject areas.

5. Assist on field trips and other school functions.

6. Develop the Educational Domain Service Plan submitted initially at 21 days and 30 days thereafter as required by funding source.

7. Ensure the initial Academic Diagnostic Assessment is administered to youth within 72 hours upon arrival and within 30 days from the date of the initial assessment. (Re-assessment).

8. Supervise youth and set appropriate behavior limits in accordance with the youth's individual treatment and behavior plan and ORR standards.

9. Communicate with the youth on their development or address issues when necessary.

10. Ensure compliance of class group size and teacher to client ratio. Establish routines with smooth transition periods.

11. Regular and punctual attendance.

12. Able to react to change productively and manage other essential tasks as assigned.

13. Demonstrate the ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

14. Ability to work with a challenging student population.

15. Model appropriate behavior.

16. Ensure proper supervision and direct line of sight of youth. Assist during transitions and movements of youth from one activity to the next and one physical location to another.

17. Design appropriate room arrangements to support program goals.

18. Assess youth’s needs and developmental progress on an on‐going basis.

19. Respond to behavioral signals from youth that indicate a need for a change in teaching style to meet the child's emotional or intellectual development needs.

20. Decoration of classrooms and weekly updates of bulletin boards.

21. Ensure the educational services adhere to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) policies and procedures, federal, state and company legal guidelines and internal policies.

22. The Teaching Assistant does not normally prepare instructional programs or create lesson topic guides, but instead uses existing lesson plans and delivers any formal instructions from existing audio-visual and /or written material prepared by others.

QUALIFICATION REQUREMENTS

Level: Required – High school diploma or GED as required by state regulations.

• 1 year of experience in a classroom, community service and/or an education setting.

• 1 year of experience in relevant field.

• 1 year of experience in teaching capacity, knowledge in curriculum development and lesson planning - preferred.

• Classroom teaching experience in an accredited early childhood facility - preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

Work is performed mostly in an office setting. Some overnight travel, public speaking, evening, and weekend work are requirements of the position. Regular computer work is also required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; finger, handle, or feel objects, or controls; reach; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
