Job description

Mesquite Independent School District is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Superintendent-Teaching and Learning. The appointee will report directly to the Deputy Superintendent.

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
  • Direct, plan, evaluate, and provide leadership for the overall instructional programs of the District. Provide leadership of campus operations related to instruction and accountability. Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Teaching and Learning Department.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • Master’s degree in education or educational administration
  • Administrator/Mid-Management Certificate
  • Central Office Experience Required
  • Residence in Mesquite is Required
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction at all levels
  • Ability to plan effectively, organize, implement, and evaluate plans
  • Ability to plan an effective research-driven instructional program while promoting efficient use of all resources
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to convey messages to a variety of audiences
  • Understanding of the change process, organization development, conflict resolution, and facilitation skills
Experience:
  • Successful experience as an administrator
  • Experience in instructional leadership roles
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Serve as a member of the executive leadership team and collaborate with the other divisions
  • Provide leadership in review and revision of curriculum and instructional programming
  • Provide leadership to campuses in the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality instructional programs
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of district instructional programs and make recommendations for changes and improvements of these programs
  • Provide organizational leadership to ensure the coordinated planning and consistent implementation of the district strategic plan and the district improvement plan
  • Demonstrate and develop high academic and behavioral expectations, collaborative planning and program development, responsive management, and personal accountability within the department and all campuses
  • In collaboration with other members of the administrative and supervisory staff, conduct campus visitations to assess program implementation and instructional effectiveness
  • Ensure the development and implementation of a focused, data-driven, differentiated professional learning plan
  • Create systems to ensure teacher engagement in the development of curriculum, instructional programming, assessments, and professional learning
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of professional learning on employee practices and student outcomes
  • Assign responsibilities, delegate specific tasks, and evaluate the performance of personnel in the instructional department
  • Develop and monitor the budget of the Teaching and Learning Department
  • Provide leadership in policy development related to curriculum, instruction, and campus operations
  • Provide effective communication with the Board of Trustees through the Superintendent’s direction
  • Meet and work with community groups on instructional and curriculum matters
  • Oversee UIL activities through the appropriate level of administration
  • Remain informed regarding current rules, regulations, and policies established by the State of Texas and the Texas Education Agency as well as innovative practices in the industry
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
