Job description

The New Beginnings High School Innovation Teacher is responsible for supervising, educating and supporting students to help them accomplish learning benchmarks by applying a project based learning approach. The Innovation Teacher is passionate about design, technology and education. The Innovation Teacher will join a unique and highly skilled group of educators who aim to bring design innovation and real world skills to students in Polk County. The goal is to enhance career readiness for these students so that they are prepared with the skills and mindsets to thrive in the future workforce. The Innovation Teacher will support this vision by leading the educational programming for students from the academic side in collaboration with the Fellow with NuVu Cambridge who will be leading Design Studio work. The Innovation Lab Teacher collaborates directly with the NuVu Fellow in the implementation of design studio work and academic and the interface and integration of learning.
Key Responsibilities

  • Support NBHS/NuVu by planning and implementing outreach activities throughout the year that include student demonstrations of work and presentations of that work to the community.
  • Manage all aspects of the project-based learning classroom and NuVu collaboration for assigned subject area/s.
  • Create a learning environment that is innovative and inspiring.
  • Develop lessons that align with defined State Standards while providing the elements of hands on quality innovative work that is the hallmark of NB/NuVu.
  • Be an actively engaged member of the school community and represent NBHS in the larger community in a positive manner
  • Support the work of para-professionals, volunteers and/or student workers.
  • Facilitate and report on assigned committee meetings.
  • Prepare for and participate in Retention Check In (RCI) reviews and other state sponsored audits, upon request.
  • Support recruitment, marketing, building community relationships, and retention by visiting the physical communities where our customers reside.
  • Suggest changes for improvement and take ownership and responsibility.
  • Assist with the implementation of pilot programs and projects (as needed).
  • Use multiple SIS systems to monitor student progress for virtual learning.
  • Engage daily with students through multiple platforms.
  • Compile, assess, and maintain customer data that drives academic goals for student growth and achievement.
  • Complete reports (as requested).
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Conduct annual review and propose appropriate updates to the Innovation Teacher Reference & Procedures Manual.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
  • Valid Florida Educator's Certificate in the subject/s assigned to teach
  • An undergraduate degree in design or design/tech field such as architecture, computational design, industrial design, or equivalent (preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Background check and fingerprinting clearance
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Knowledge of applicable computer software and hardware process applications such as spreadsheets, word-processing, database and operating systems, and/or presentation software
  • Valid Florida driver's license, reliable transportation, valid automobile insurance

Successful teachers in this setting are enthusiastic and creative makers of things. Possesses a lifelong learner attitude and excitement about expanding their own and students knowledge and creativity. Desire to serve students in an above and beyond mentality.
Environment Requires
working with high school students in a highly interactive environment. The learning is project based and active with a high level of classroom activity, movement, and productive noise. The project based classroom is an active fully engaged classroom. You must have a passion for working with high school students and other adults.
Physical Requirements
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. Must have the ability to utilize and interact with technology. Must be able to endure outside weather conditions and elements for the purpose of home visits.
