The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.

The NYISO's Operations department invites applications for a full-time System Operator Trainer.

As System Operator Trainer, you will develop, deliver and document power system operations training for NYISO operations staff and other operating entities within New York. Training is delivered in classroom, simulation, computer based and OJT formats. Instruction is provided in self study, one-on-one, small group and large group forums.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in all phases of the Systematic Approach to Training in support of the various System Operator Training (SOT) training programs, as assigned, including, but not limited to, NYISO Grid Operations Initial, Advanced and Continuing Training, Transmission Owner Operator Continuing Training and NERC required NYISO Operations Support Staff Training
  • Analyze the training needs of the trainees included within the various SOT Training programs
  • Design and develop training materials using a variety of instructional media for use in a variety of settings, including simulation environments
  • Implement training in a variety of settings, including classrooms, computer-based settings, and simulation environments
  • Evaluate training courses and programs in order to identify areas for improvement as well as best practices
  • Collaborate with the training staffs of NPCC Control Areas and New York Control Area (NYCA) Transmission Owners to deliver joint and coordinated training
  • Collaborate with Grid Operations staff to review and update Control Room Operator tasks when necessary to ensure compliance with NERC Standard PER-005-2 requirements
  • Document and maintain training records for audit and compliance purposes in accordance with NERC and NYISO requirements utilizing various compliance tools and software programs
  • Support integration of processes, tools and displays into system operations through participation in projects of varying scope including User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
  • Participate as a contributing member of the NYISO Curriculum Review Committee (CRC)
  • Participate as a part of internal and external training committees and technical working groups
  • Provide technical and/or training support to various NYISO committees and departments. Participate as Operations SME for Market Structures for market participant training.
  • Participate in regional and national forums on power system operations training.
  • Evaluate and recommend materials, instruction systems and formal courses which could enhance the content or effectiveness of NYISO Operations training.
  • Recruit and assist internal and external subject matter experts, as required.
  • Using lesson plans prepared by others, prepare for and conduct training classes during the absence of the assigned instructor.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of resource material.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; Associate's degree (AS, AAS) in Computer Science, Electrical Power, Mechanical or Electrical Technology or other related technical field of study required.
  • Formal training in instructional skills and training methods desired.
  • Five years of related technical or scientific/engineering training experience in an electrical utility organization, technical training facility, US Navy nuclear training program or power plant training program.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver training to a technical trade school or junior college level.
  • Documented qualifications for conducting Electric Power System Operator training or an extensive knowledge of power system operation, or instructional design experience on technical topics is required.
  • Knowledge of federal and state electric utility requirements and policies concerning electric system operations and knowledge of bulk transmission system operations and electricity markets is desired.
  • Ability to learn, apply and describe complex concepts such as NYISO tariffs, governance, market structure, settlements, market information systems and bid processes would also be beneficial; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

NERC Reliability Coordinator certification preferred. Accredited trainer documentation and/or educational certification (AMA, Langevin, Navy Master Training Specialist or equivalent) preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, operational criteria documents, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff and external industry partners.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical and complex problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Intermediate competency in Windows operating environment using MS Office applications including PowerPoint, e-mail and Internet programs.
  • Ability to operate the NYISO Integrated System Simulator programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to perform routine office tasks. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Contact with staff and public will occur. Travel may be required to attend and/or conduct meetings, conferences and training.­­­­­­­­­­­­ This position may require work on nights, weekends or holidays.
