Job description

Under the direction of the Investment Director (ID), the Investment Manager (IM) will support the ID and have shared responsibility for the Sustainable Investment Portfolio, implementing the governance structure to support the investment, and portfolio management functions. For the Sustainable Investments function, the IM will be both an investor using an allocation to the SI unit (primarily for investments in Private Equity funds and co-investments with such funds), and an advisor to the other Asset Classes on Sustainable Investment opportunities.
The IM will maintain a positive team management approach while demonstrating CalPERS' Core Values of Quality, Respect, Integrity, Openness, Accountability, and Balance in accordance with personal work ethic in alignment with CalPERS Investment Beliefs.
Duties Include:

  • Support the SI Leadership Team in developing, leading, and implementing a Sustainable Investment Portfolio.
  • Develop governance structure to support the investment and portfolio management functions.
  • Responsible for portfolio management and ultimately contributing to alpha generation by using sustainability themed investment strategies, including climate-related investment opportunities.
Telework Information : This position is eligible for hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.

Desirable QualificationsIn addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • 5+ years of investment experience in public and / or private markets through asset managers, co-investments with asset managers and/or direct investments in companies
  • Experience in Private Equity manager selection, and experience in making direct investments in companies and co-investments alongside asset managers
  • Experience in identifying and successfully investing in investment opportunities that will come about from a global transition to a low carbon economy in the area of climate solutions and climate-tech
  • Portfolio management experience
  • Significant industry experience in sustainability and ESG
  • Strong sustainability industry knowledge, a recognized thought leader with a broad network throughout the investment and sustainability industries
  • Experience investing in one or more of the low-carbon transition investment areas - i.e., clean energy investment, climate tech, 'brown to green' transition investments, and / or climate solutions supply chain.
  • Asset owner experience
  • CFA Charter holder and/or having a CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing
