We are currently accepting applications for the position of Sustainability Analyst* to fill one (1) vacancy in the Office of Sustainability. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

The Sustainability Analyst will support the development, implementation and monitoring of several transformative efforts underway in 2024 including a Climate Action and Adaption Plan, Zero Emission Vehicle Transition Plan, capital projects like the LEED Gold Museum expansion, the Northside Ag Innovation Center, Citywide Tree Inventory, organic waste diversion program, co-digestion project, Eastside Climate Collaborative Transformative Climate Community project and many more. The City of Riverside's extraordinary efforts in sustainability have contributed to the City receiving awards for its green fleet, local food system program, waste to energy co-digestion, complete streets, community engagement, climate action plan and, after a statewide competition, was selected for the Southern California Headquarters of the California Air Resources Board, which is the largest LEED Platinum Net Zero building on the planet. The City's sustainability efforts began in 2005 with the creation of a Clean and Green Taskforce, 2007 Sustainability Policy Statement, its first LEED certified building in 2010, a subregional Climate Action Plan in 2014, and the City's first Climate Action Plan in January 2016.

The Envision Riverside 2025 Strategic Plan, approved by the City Council in 2020, established the City's map for desired outcomes in Sustainability including the Environmental Stewardship strategic priority, which includes six goals: a zero-carbon electric grid, management of water resources, healthy air quality, waste reduction, natural land management and community-wide carbon neutrality by 2040. The City Council approved an Office of Sustainability (2020) within the City Manager's Office with a core of existing staff and, more recently, approved the addition of two full-time personnel.

Under general supervision, the Sustainability Analyst will assist with preparation of revenue estimates; assist in monitoring performance criteria for work programs of City departments; perform specialized work in finance and budget analysis, preparation, administration and reports; perform a variety of studies and research relative to programs and their financial support; provide financial/budgetary staff support to a large department; and perform related work as required.
* Sustainability Analyst is a working title; official job classification is Management Analyst.Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Participate in staff research and analyses activities of moderate difficulty concerning organizational structure, staffing, operations, procedures and policies; make recommendations for departmental and city policy.
  • Assist with the developing, implementing, projecting and monitoring revenue and expense related activities for city programs and contracted services.
  • Participate in the analysis and control of budget expenditures.
  • Participate in the development of management information systems and processes.
  • Provide technical assistance to departments and/or divisions in the formulation of budget requests.
  • Participate in research and analyses activities concerning organizational structure, staffing, operations and policies.
  • Prepare council reports, statistical tables, charts and graphs.
  • Lead and coordinate work projects of para-professional, technical and administrative support staff.
  • May supervise technical and administrative support staff.
Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration, business administration, finance, accounting or a closely related field. Additional professional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.


Experience: One year of experience in governmental budgetary, finance, and revenue analysis and projections activities, preferably in municipal government.


Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, appropriate Class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Highly Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience managing City/Municipal projects
  • A degree in environmental science, environmental policy, sustainability, data analytics, engineering or related combination
  • Experience in conveying ecological/climatic principals, environmental regulations and related information to the public

  2. An advanced-level degree from an accredited US college or university.
