GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, acts as the instrument operator or the rod person during field surveys; processes survey data using software programs; assists supervisor in the layout of construction plans, design plans, topographic surveys, hydrographic surveys, boundary and vertical control; conducts preliminary surveys, construction staking, establishing survey control, and maintaining that control for future references; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Survey Technician II is the journey-level paraprofessional class in the survey class series. Incumbents perform survey projects that are more varied and difficult, requiring the application of more detailed knowledge of land survey principles, methods and instrumentation.
Survey Technician II is distinguished from Assistant Land Surveyor in that an incumbent in the latter class may provide lead work direction for other survey crew members and has respon-sibility for more complex projects.

Learns and performs technical duties as a member of an engineering field survey crew; clears brush and sets markers; cleans, adjusts and maintains survey instruments, such as transits, levels and electronic distance measuring instruments; uses manual and electronic instruments to determine points, lines, elevations and distances for property right-of-way, construction, triangulation, precise traverse, topographic and seismic movement surveys.
2. Acts as the instrument operator and rod person during field surveys.
3. Collects and transcribes observed and computed data; maintains records and checks data, field sketches and calculations for accuracy.
