This is a temporary appointment. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.Qualifications: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. Specialized Experience GS-4 Survey Technician: You must have 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector. OR Successful completion of 2 years of postsecondary education that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3 or equivalent. OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
Specialized Experience GS-5 Survey Technician: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include conducting surveys, typically with an assistant, using hand instruments such as hand levels and compasses, making simple traverse surveys using compass and tape, measuring small land areas, using rod, tape and hand level, to obtain rough estimates of yardage to be excavated; and performing recording assignments which require concentration and specialized skill such as that required in making manual computations that involve elementary arithmetic processes made complex by virtue of the number and variety of manipulations involved and the speed with which successive readings are called. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science or mathematics. OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
Specialized Experience GS-6 Survey Technician: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 grade level in the Federal service which includes possessing the ability to meet the skills required in the lower grades and safely operate various types of surveying equipment and applicable survey data collection, analysis, and file editing software using land surveying equipment. Assists office engineers and higher grade technicians by performing engineering computations and data processing.; OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Specialized Experience GS-7 Survey Technician: One year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include, possessing the ability to assistant the Survey Team Leader with the real time acquisition of engineering, scientific, environmental, topographic, geodetic, and hydrographic data associated with the districts dredging and civil works projects. Uses surveying methods such as precise leveling, state plane coordinates, second and third order traverse procedures, and computations to help plan and conduct various types of surveys; applicable operating systems as required to operate hydrographic data collection and analysis and file editing software; OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.Education: Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.Individual Occupational RequirementsBasic Requirements:Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above):

Specialized experience is technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector.

GS-4 Survey Technician: 2 years above high school, with courses related to occupation mentioned in qualifications.
GS-5 Survey Technician: 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation mentioned in Qualifications.
GS-6 and above: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
