Job description

Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master's Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master's and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.
The Research Scientist (RS) III (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) provides epidemiologic expertise related to lead and other workplace hazards and health effects pertinent to California's workers. Operates and maintains the Adult Blood Lead Registry . Along with the Chief of the Occupational Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (OLPPP), prioritizes, plans, and acts as a lead in overseeing the Registry. Designs and conducts research studies on human populations, public health investigations, and statistical evaluations of a highly developed scientific scope and complexity related to occupational lead poisoning and other recognized and emerging occupational health issues in California. The RS III acts as subject matter expert and technical consultant to the Department programs and members of the public. May require periodic overnight travel to scientific meetings or investigation sites within California, up to 5%.
The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (RSS I) , Chief, OLPPP, Occupational Health Branch (OHB).
A Research Scientist (RS) III or RS II (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) will be considered for this position. The position responsibilities for an RS II will be adjusted as appropriate for that level.

The Occupational Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (OLPPP) is a part of the California Department of Public Health's Occupational Health Branch. OLPPP provides services statewide to prevent and reduce lead poisoning in California workplaces, including tracking blood lead levels in adults; investigating work-related lead poisoning cases; and providing information and technical assistance to employers, workers, physicians, and others.
OLPPP is located in the Occupational Health Branch (OHB) of the California Department of Public Health. OHB devoted to improving worker health and safety through prevention activities. OHB works to prevent injuries and illnesses on the job before they happen. A multidisciplinary team including physicians, industrial hygienists, epidemiologists, and health communication specialists collaborates to identify and evaluate workplace hazards, track patterns of work-related injury and illness, develop training and informational materials, provide technical assistance to others to prevent work-related injury and illness, work with partners to develop safer ways to work, and recommend protective occupational health standards.
