Job Description:
- Prepares for scheduled operative procedure. Utilizes surgeons preference lists to provide instruments supplies and equipment for surgical and diagnostic procedures and modifies set ups for individual patient needs.
- Creates and maintains the sterile field used during surgical procedures; observes for events that may contaminate the sterile field and then initiates corrective action.
- Passes instruments sponges sutures and the other sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assists during procedures.
- Holds retraction devices and anticipates surgeons needs during course of surgery. Passes surgical specimens to the circulating Registered Nurse verbalizing source of specimen and disposition. Participates in the counting of sharps sponges and instruments used in surgical procedures.
- Assists the surgeon the registered nurse and the anesthesiologist in the care of patients in the Operating Room and/or GI/Bronch Lab.
- Responsible to maintain up-to-date knowledge of the location of supplies and equipment within the department. Inspects and prepares surgical instruments for sterilization and/or storage. Operates maintains and documents use of sterilizing equipment; identifies correct sterilization method. Performs and documents biological monitoring when necessary. Inspects decontaminates leak tests and sterilizes flexible endoscopes.
- Participates in the orientation of new employees and the teaching experience of students.
- Other duties as assigned. Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program is required. Clinical rotations provided by Surgical Technologist program is required.
- American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire. Formal externship or one year experience is preferred.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program is required. Clinical rotations provided by Surgical Technologist program is required.
