Job description

We are seeking a full time Surgical Tech as part of our Innovative dedicated call team.

This full time salaried position will still be eligible for overtime and shift differential. 

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a Perioperative Registered Nurse, performs routine surgical tasks of moderate difficulty. Demonstrates a firm knowledge of sterile technique, surgical principles, and instrumentation. May be involved with care/service to patients over the continuum of the life span. Adheres to AST standards of Practice.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduate of a formal operating room technician training program preferred. Six months’ experience in the operating room is recommended.

Certifications
BLS required.
 
Licensure
Certified Operating Room Technicians must keep their certification current.
 
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Firm knowledge and application of aseptic technique, surgical principles, procedures, and instrumentation.
Demonstrates understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and bacteriology.
Ability to organize work, maintain good interpersonal relationships, function under stress, and to work under supervision.
Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients.
This knowledge and skills may be acquired through education, training, and experience.
Bases knowledge on evidence and standards based practice
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Resource Planning & Surgical Preparation:
  1. Assists circulating nurse with patient care.
  2. Gathers case cart, equipment, etc., for each surgery.
  3. Wipes down the operating room furniture and spotlights prior to the first surgery of the day as required.
  4. Prepares the operating room and surgical instruments for surgery.
  5. Performs sharps, sponge, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse, according to policy
  6. Orders and restock supplies in assigned areas.
  7. Practices proper aseptic techniques.
  8. Assists circulating nurse with identification and proper care of all specimens., logs specimens into GIS in Pathology office.
  9. Has age specific knowledge and understanding of standard surgical equipment (i.e., tourniquet, spotlight, suction, cautery, etc.)
  10. Participates in orientation of new personnel and students.
  11. Assumes additional work responsibilities to help meet department needs (i.e., call)
  12. Follows all hospital and department safety regulations.
  13. Follows personnel guidelines in regards to attendance, punctuality, earned leave, and leaving facility for personal business during scheduled work hours.
  14. Cooperates with the risk management/nursing Continuous Quality Improvement in preparing reports and follow-up plans.

  1. Uses supplies economically.
  2. Assists with identification of worn or damaged surgical equipment.

  1. Maintains current knowledge of professional techniques and practices through continuing education. (Association of Surgical Technologists).
  2. Actively participates in unit meetings and educational programs involving nursing care.
  3. Able to search MSDS on line
  4. Knowledgeable of location of hospital and department policies and all hospital/department policies and procedures pertaining to the operating room department.

Functional Demands:

Must be, through training and experience, able to appropriately provide treatments to the following patients:
Neonatal (0-28 days)
Infant (28 days-1 yr.)
Pediatric (1-12 yrs.)

Geriatric 
 
Working Conditions
Works indoors in heated/air conditioned surgical suite. Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, day shift. May be required, on occasion, to work other shifts or function in other roles to facilitate department needs. Exposure to diseases and disease-producing organisms, possible caustic gases or chemicals and radiation (Category I). Requires sharing of call duty in accordance to Operating Room policy.
