Job Overview:
A Surgical Scrub Technician is a member of the operating room team. The Surgical Scrub Tech is a certified operating room assistant who performs multiple job duties, including providing the surgeon with the instruments needed to perform surgery. The Surgical Scrub Technician, also called operating room technicians, prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, and help providers during surgeries.
Duties:
- Knowledge of preparing the operating room for surgery.
- Knowledge of sterile equipment and ensuring adequate supplies for surgery.
- Knowledge of preparing sterile field and disinfecting procedure sites.
- Knowledge of how to pass instruments to the surgeon during the procedure.
- Knowledge of counting supplies and monitoring the sterile field for foreign objects.
- Technologists also may handle specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
- Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
- Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
- Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
- Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
- Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
- Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
- Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures.
- Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from a Surgical Scrub Technician program with minimum 1 year experience. Registered or certified medical assistant will be accepted in lieu of work experience.
- Surgical Scrub Technician Certification.
- Current BLS certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Operating room experience.
- Case management experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from a Surgical Scrub Technician program with minimum 1 year experience. Registered or certified medical assistant will be accepted in lieu of work experience.

- Current BLS certification.
