Position Summary:
As defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), surgical assistants provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operative under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

Education/Experience:

Graduate from surgical assisting programs accredited through ARC/STSA; and/or completion of an accredited CFA program; or completion of requirements from an accredited organization and recent eight (8) years of surgical technologist experience.


Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) from The National Board of Surgical Technology, or Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) from the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA), or The American Board of Surgical Assistants (SA-C). Basic Life Support (BLS).

PREFERENCES WILL BE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS WHO DOCUMENT THE FOLLOWING:
  • Minimum (2) two years (within the last (3) three years) continuous experience as a Surgical First Assistant with Cardiovascular Heart, Ortho, Neuro, Spine, and Gyn procedures.
  • Experience with vein harvesting procedures a plus.
Knowledge of:
Anatomy and physiology; microbiology; pharmacology; medical-legal considerations involved in patient care; infection control and sterilization procedures; surgical equipment, instruments and supplies; methods for draping patients; operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the CSFA assists; proper lifting techniques; environmental safety principles and procedures; variety of surgical techniques; body mechanics; a variety of equipment, varying according to specialty (video systems, YAG, carbon dioxide lasers and x-rays); operating room fundamentals, including aseptic principles and techniques; medical terminology; acute and chronic disease processes; department and hospital safety practice and procedures; patient rights; age specific patient care practices; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.

Skill in:
Operating room procedures; setting up and restocking operating room; surgical procedures; identifying patient emergency situations and instituting proper response procedures; recognizing safety hazards and initiate appropriate corrective action; using computers and related software applications; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
