We are looking for a diligent oral surgery assistant to support our oral surgeon before, during, and after each dental procedure. Your responsibilities will include receiving patients, viewing charts, and beginning patient preparation. You will make notes about performed procedures, progress, recommendations, and other subjects in the patient's EMR chart. You must ensure that surgical tools are properly cleaned and sterilized before procedures begin. You may be responsible for tasks such as taking x-rays, processing items such as removable dental appliances and casts or impressions, checking vital signs or maintaining IV fluid flows during procedures. Some clerical work, including record keeping and handling phone calls may be necessary.
To be successful as an oral surgery assistant, you should be highly organized and attentive to patients' needs. An outstanding oral surgery assistant should have an excellent understanding of oral surgery procedures and exceptional hand-eye coordination.
- Assist Surgeon during consultations and treatment.
- Basic lab duties (Impressions, pouring up/trimming models).
- Proper instrument cleaning in accordance with infection control and biohazard protocols
- Autoclave operation and function
- Surgical tray set-up
- Identification of instruments used in the clinic.
- Room set up/break down for IV anesthesia and surgery.
- Seat patient and perform pre-op set-up.
- Review charts.
- Nitrous oxide set-up.
- Properly positioning restraints.
- Support airway for sedated patients.
- Ability to circulate and retrieve instruments.
- Excellent patient care & communication.
- Restock supplies, forms, handouts, and rooms.
- Take vital signs.
- Familiar with all forms and handouts (procedure-based, consent forms, etc.)
- Aware of an in compliance with OSHA requirements (e.g personal protection)
- Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, filing, and charting.
- Make follow up phone calls to patients.
- May take X-Rays.
- Properly closing and opening the office each day (Tanks, Suction, Xray)
- Greet patients and make them feel comfortable.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current CPR/BLS certification required.
- Great organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to provide excellent patient care, even under stressful circumstances.
- Consistent professionalism in appearance and attitude.
- Flexibility to occasionally travel to all 6 office locations as needed (Alexandria, Burke, Centreville, Fairfax, Reston, Woodbridge).
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Assistant program preferred.
- Certification as a Surgical Assistant preferred.
- Current American Heart Association BLS CPR certification preferred.
- Dental Radiation Safety Certification.

- Physical requirements include driving, flying, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time.
