JOB SUMMARY

 

Supervise Veterinary Technicians and Laboratory Technicians to ensure the care of laboratory animals, facilities, and animal environments. Manage daily tasks associated with scheduling and coordinating processing events of colony animals. Independently handle routine personnel-related issues; assist in handling of complex personnel-related issues. Oversee and assist with monitoring of animal areas for adherence to regulatory agencies (i.e.: AAALAC, USDA, CDC) requirements and industry standards for animal care and welfare. Coordinate, train, evaluate, and provide corrective actions for animal resources staff. Support other LAM departments as needed. 

 

Essential duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Supervise and review work of assigned departmental employees to ensure accuracy and adherence to departmental policies, practices, and procedures (SOPs, safety procedures and biosafety protocols).  
  • Schedule and prioritize workload of group members to provide hands-on technical support to veterinarians. Manage overtime, approve time entry, and coordinate vacation schedules.
  • Oversee the basic day to day care of laboratory animals, facilities, and animal environments. 
  • Assist in the interview and selection of qualified personnel.  Recommend personnel actions, including hiring, promotions and raises.  Partner with Human Resources and management to address performance issues and deliver disciplinary actions.  Draft appropriate personnel action paperwork.
  • Identify training and development needs of direct reports.  Assist in the development, implementation and delivery of departmental training programs; ensure that direct reports receive departmental orientation and necessary on-the-job training.  Oversee maintenance of group training manual and training records.
  • Monitor performance of direct reports.  Provide regular coaching and counseling.  Assist in preparation and delivery of salary and performance reviews.
  • Collaborate with leadership team to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance and communication of departmental systems and SOPs. Assist in the development and communication of job descriptions for subordinate positions.
  • Assist Lead Site Veterinarian in oversight of animal holding program with respect to overall colony health preventative medicine, clinical care, and client owned animal colony management.
  • Assist Lead Site Veterinarian in oversight of quarantine program which includes participation in vendor management, e.g. reviewing vendor health information, communicating specific issues related to shipments to them, tracking overall vendor performance, and interacting with the CDC.
  • Provide support for activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including protocol review, program review and facility inspections. May serve on the IACUC.
  • Lead the processing team and organize management of samples as well as review of test results.
  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate records of controlled substances according to current regulations.
  • Ensure that departmental area(s) and equipment is maintained in good working condition by scheduling repairs, preventative maintenance, and calibration. 
  • Oversee inventory and stocking of the veterinary and laboratory department.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education:  Associate degree (A.A. /A.S.) or equivalent in life sciences or related discipline.


Experience:  4-6 years related experience. Two years direct experience with relevant species, one year leadership experience preferred. 

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

 

Certification/Licensure:  AALAS Certification at LATG level required, CMAR preferred. 
 

Other:  Effective communication and interpersonal skills required.  Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations and guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals including facility inspection, procurement, and distribution of laboratory animals preferred. Knowledge of animal care and welfare standards as defined by AAALAC, USDA, CDC, US Fish and Wildlife preferred. Must be computer literate, experience with Microsoft required, Enos Database and SAP preferred. Occasional travel may be required.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Employees must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold heavy objects up to and including 50 pounds; this includes work materials, equipment, and/or animals.
  • Must be able to perform procedures, which require, talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods of time, entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (PPE) according to OSHA regulations and company standards.
  • May occasionally move animal racks, cages, and other equipment.
  • Regularly moves from one area or building to another to perform oversight and training of subordinates and observe animal areas.
  • Regularly provides information to and receives information from/through various technologies, media, sources, and contacts.  Must be able to accurately exchange accurate information in these situations.


Work Environment:

  • Both general office and vivarium environment working conditions. 
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee frequently works in general office conditions where the noise level is low to moderate and occasionally works in the animal vivarium where the noise level is moderate to high.
  • The employee occasionally wears protective clothing (goggles, face shield, surgical mask, cap, gloves, scrubs, boots); works in tight or confined spaces; works with sharp objects; works near toxic or caustic chemicals; works near biohazards; and works with live animals with risk of exposure to allergens and/or zoonotic diseases.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, unpleasant odors, and wet, humid, and/or extreme temperature conditions.

 

 

The pay for this position is $80-$85K. Please note that compensation varies based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, and certifications.
