This position works under the supervision of the Emergency Room (ER) nurse manager and the director. Maintains responsibility and accountability for the quality/efficiency of patient care and patient throughout in the ER. Work with the nurse manager to establish annual goals/objectives and possess a high degree of clinical expertise in emergency nursing. Collaborates with ER physicians and other hospital personnel to coordinate care and patient throughput. Participates in direct patient care and works within established budget to assist in determining staffing needs and scheduling patterns for appropriate coverage. Plans and implements programs for orientation and on going education of the ER Staff. Works to assure compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) standards and regulations.
(35%)* Participates in direct patient care. Acts as a role model and mentor. Assists with maintaining quality assurance within the area of responsibility. Available for staff consultations and recommends changes when appropriate, based on clinical expertise and throughout knowledge.
(35%)* Supervises patient activity/flow with in the ER. Provides on?going evaluation of patient status and collaborates with ER physicians and attending physicians involved in patient are, as necessary to promote optimum patient outcomes and ER throughput.
(20%)* Makes temporary changes in patient assignments as the level of activity/acuity changes to facilitate optimum patient care.
(10%)* Assists with hiring, disciplining, counseling and discharging employees within the area according to medical center policy. Assists with the completion of job performance evaluations. Serves on nursing service committees as requested by the manager or director. Acts as interim manager during the ER managers absence.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists with developing and implementing policies and procedures for the ER.
Assists with developing further guidelines and standards of care for the triage area and the charge role. Interprets physician orders and help staff implement orders to assist physician making a diagnosis, treat the condition and obtain desired outcome(s) efficiently.
Identifies needs, plans, develops and implements programs for orientation and continuing education for ER Staff.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Two (2) years of ER experience in an ER with a minimum of 25,000 visits/year.
Excellent ER nursing skills.
Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups, and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
HAZMAT classes previously attended and working knowledge of guidelines in practice preferred.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
