The Washington University School of Medicine Operations & Facilities Management Department provides a range of services for the medical campus in a customer-focused, efficient, and sustainable manner.Operations & Facilities Management maintains 61 university buildings and provides operational, planning, and construction services to over 8.3 million gross square feet of space. We will open three new facilities between 2023 and 2025 with over 1.5M BGSF. In addition, the School of Medicine continues expanding its reach on and off campus in teaching, clinical care, and research. Our team plays a vital and important role in delivering care, research, and education.
The position supervises custodians daily within approximately 1.2 million square feet of research, teaching, and office space. Ensures cleaning service levels are met throughout their area of responsibility. Ensures department processes, policies, and best practices are followed by staff. Familiarizes newly hired custodians with their assigned work areas and observes quality and quantity of the work performed; trains on proper cleaning techniques and equipment usage; orders and distributes supplies/materials. Promotes good customer service while resolving customer concerns.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Serves as Team Leader for safety to discuss and provide proper PPE to custodial staff.
- Conducts regular team meetings.
- Canvass all areas daily, conducting spot checks for thoroughness and quality.
- Supervises and trains custodial workers on general cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, buffing floors, extracting carpets, and reporting daily progress to the supervisor.
- Performs custodial inspections to ensure the quality of work in assigned areas.
- Performs building inspections for quality assurance (cleanliness, cosmetics, repairs, etc.).
- Compiles a weekly list of supplies needed.
- Orders and distributes cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
- Ensures that all keys and pagers are checked in and out according to department procedures.
- Learns and applies knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
- Works with the supervisor on staffing, paperwork, scheduling issues, and monthly quality assurance inspections.
- Communicate effectively at all levels, both orally and in writing.
- Instructs assigned personnel in the proper manner or execution of responsibilities.
- Assigns and reviews the work of direct report custodial staff.
- Works independently with little supervision.
- Assists supervisor with continuous training for current employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
- 1st shift schedule is typically Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM.
- Some weekends and evenings may be required.
- Exposure to chemicals.
- Typically bending, crouching, stooping.
- Frequent lifting 25 pounds or more.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some college.
- Supervisory experience.
- Competent in cleaning techniques and all phases of floor care.
- Ability to plan and organize activities and work cooperatively with people.
- Good decision-making skills.
- Follows safe working practices to ensure safety for themselves and others
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to utilize computers for communication and documentation.
- Ability to read and have the ability to determine the proper dilution of chemicals and other products.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent high school certification and two to three years’ experience in the custodial industry.
- Must have a valid Missouri CDL/Class E driver license or Illinois Class D license.

G09Salary Range
$44,700.00 - $73,800.00 / Annually The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.Questions
